Thesis ment: Religion can be used to promote hate resulting in violent acts such as the rape and murder of our LGBTQI neighbors. Annotated Bibliography Brentliger, Rick. Gay Christian 101. Accessed 20 Mar. 2012 from http://www.gaychristian101.com/ This website is crucial to my study. Gay Christian shows that religion can be a tool. Not all Christians believe that the LGBTQI community has to be a faithless choice. The LGBTQI lifestyles are not a choice for the individual. However, if an individual happens to fall into the LGBTQI category, it does not mean that religion has to be forsaken. Religion can be positive or negative depending on how an individual interprets it. The Gay Christian shows that Christianity can be reconciled with the LGBTQI community. This website also dismisses many myths that Christianity condemns the LGBTQI community. Cannon, Justin R. The Bible, Christianity, & Homosexuality. New York: CreateSpace, 2008. This source is a book. The Bible, Christianity, & Homosexuality will be used two ways. The first is to show what types of myths exist about the Bible and homosexuality. The Bible only mentions homosexuality several times in the Bible. The first time was when angels visited Sodom and Gomorrah. Thus the name Sodomites were given to homosexuals. The Bible does not speak of domestic partners in a homosexual relationship. A mob wanted to rape the male angels. On this account most Christians think homosexuality is equal to rape. Justin Cannon does his best to show that one account does not represent all homosexuals. This source will be useful in laying a foundation for religious bias against the LGBTQI community. It will also show that homosexuals can also be Christian. Chellew-Hodge, Candace. Bulletproof Faith: A Spiritual Survival Guide for Gay and Lesbian Christians. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2008. This resource is a book. Candace Chellew-Hodge shares her experiences as a gay Christian. This is a biography about how the author dealt with hatred from religious zealots. She shows how her religion, Christianity, can be used against the LGBTQI community. This book also shows specific incidents of hatred and violence against members of the LGBTQI community. Despite the violence and hatred against the LGBTQI community due to religion, many LGBTQI individuals still retain their belief in their religion. This source will also show that even LGBTQI individuals that are Christian do not escape violence of discrimination. Sexuality or being defined as a LGBTQI community member is more important to the opposition than the individual’s religion or beliefs. Dwyer, John F. Those seven references-a study of 7 references to homosexuality in the Bible. USA: BookSurge, 2007. This book is another source that studies homosexuality and the Bible. Dwyer numbered all of the references of homosexuality in the Bible to seven. Each circumstance is examined individually. Like the case of homosexuality in Sodom and Gomorrah, Dwyer presents each instance. This source is important to show that Christianity does not promote violence. Everyone is a sinner, no matter their sexuality. If Jesus died for all sins, then the LGBTQI community would not be an exception. Religion is only used to promote hate and rape by humans, not God. If the cases of homosexuality can be examined, maybe Christians can promote peace instead of hate. Helminiak, Daniel. What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality. USA: Alamo Square Press, 2000. This book talks about homosexuality in the Bible. What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality shows that homosexuality is not necessarily in itself a sin. Heterosexuality in itself is not a sin. Sexuality is a gift from God, but can be misused. This book shows homosexuality in the Bible. It answers what context homosexuality is used in the Bible. King James Version Bible. Mark 12:30-31. This verse in the King James Bible is where everyone is commanded to love not only God, but our neighbors as well. It also shows that only God is the true judge. No one on Earth should pass judgment on their neighbors. The members of the LGBTQI community are neighbors. Thus as neighbors of the LGBTQI community, violent rape, death, and violence should not be tolerated. Christians should spread the love of Jesus, not misuse the Bible in order to promote hate. If a person knows the Bible, and quotes like from Mark 12:30-21 then violence against anyone would not be an option ever. Miner, Jeff. and John Tyler Connoley. The children are free: Reexamining the biblical evidence on same-sex relationships. New York: Found Pearl Press, 2002. This book is another insight on how the Bible treats homosexuality. It goes into detail about loving same-sex relationships instead of just the homosexuality act itself. It also describes Gods attitude toward them. Rev. Miner and John Connoley once again examine the passages hate filled zealots use against the LGBTQI community. The book offers a different interpretation of the passages. One story told in this book is Jesus’ encounter with a gay person Jesus did not condemn, but gave a loving response. The children are free: Reexamining the biblical evidence on same-sex relationships guides the reader to think for themselves instead of looking toward rhetoric by LGBTQI opponents. Nathan, Melanie. “Update Points to Extreme Brutality in the Horrific ‘Corrective’ Rape & Murder of 24 year old Lesbian.” 29 April 2011. Lez Get Real. Accessed 20 Mar. 2012 from http://lezgetreal.com/2011/04/updated-points-to-extreme-brutality-in-the-horrific-corrective-rape-murder-of-24-year-old-lesbian/ This website reports of a specific corrective rape. The story is of the corrective rape and murder of Noxolo Nogwaza. She was brutally raped, beat, cut, and had her brains bashed in. This story also retells the account of other corrective rape instances. Not all corrective rapes are of women. Homosexual men are raped and tortured as well. This connects the religion aspect with the hate, rape, and violence against lesbians and homosexuals. The missionaries in Africa have twisted Jesus’ purpose of love. These native converted Christians have been taught to hurt those opposing God. Lesbians and homosexuals are evil and oppose God according to what they have been taught. Stearns, Richard. The Hole in Our Gospel: What Does God Expect of Us? New York: Thomas Nelson, 2009. This book shows what Christians should be doing instead of persecuting the LGBTQI community. Poverty, malaria, AIDS, cholera, and other human suffering worldwide should be alleviated by Christians. Instead of opposing the LGBTQI community through the use of hateful sermons, Christians should help others. Christians are building huge churches through the average citizen’s fear of homosexuality. This books shows the Mormon Church gave twenty million dollars to support Prop 8 in California which was against same sex marriage. Would Jesus be fighting against same sex marriage, or would Jesus be helping the poor? This book shows that the poor need the Church’s energies more than stopping homosexuality. Tamale, Sylvia. African Sexualities: A Reader. New York: Pambazuka Press, 2011. This book shows the hate, violence, and rape against lesbians in Africa. Since Africa was colonized by Christian missionaries, the promotion of hate toward homosexuality is prevalent in many African countries. Corrective rapes are common in countries like South Africa. These rapes are used to correct lesbians. Corrective rapes are not an attempt to get a lesbian aroused by a man. It is a brutal attack. Many times the lesbian dies, or is scarred forever by these corrective rapes. These crimes are not prosecuted, despite many countries having no laws against homosexuality. Some African countries still have bans on homosexuality, but most like South Africa have no laws against it. This book shows how Christianity has be warped into a violent tool of rape, murder, and violence. White, Mel. Religion Gone Bad: The Hidden Dangers of the Christian Right. New York: Tarcher, 2006. Rev. White tells of a Christian Right that has become a cult. Religion Gone Bad: The Hidden Dangers of the Christian Right predicts in the near future church and state will become one. The U.S. Constitution will be rewritten to obey fundamental extreme Biblical concepts. This Christian America has already become popular. How many times has some said ‘the U.S. Constitution and founding fathers were Christians?’ The founding fathers also owned slaves, should the U.S. reinstate slavery? Rev. White is an expert on this subject. He is not only a Christian, but also a pastor, professor, filmmaker, television producer, author, and ghost writer for Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and Billy Graham. What makes this book such a useful resource is the idea that the preachers of hate against the LGBTQI community really believe in their dogma. Their belief is so strong that the LGBTQI community is evil their sermons come across sincere. If Robertson thinks it is acceptable to harm a lesbian, maybe individuals should go harm them. This book shows the hate machine. Read More
