Psalms 42-72 week 3 Question Messianic prophecies found in Psalms 45,50,69,72 Psalm 45: Psalm 45 is a Messianic psalm; the primary message is Jesus Christ and His bride which is the church. In Verse six, we see the king described as God. Then, in verse 2, we see the king described as man. This describes the hypostatic union of Christ the God-Man. Furthermore, in verse two we see the prophecy that His name and throne will be established forever. This is also another Messianic prophecy about our Lord Jesus Christ. Then, Verses ten thru thirteen describe the preparation of the bride, which is the church. The description in verse thirteen describes the resurrected church dressed in fine garments. This psalm describes the wedding banquet with Christ and His church, and Christ’s eternal kingdom. Psalm 50: The psalm describes the setting around the time of the Feast of Tabernacles. During the feast the reading of the Law was given to the people. The psalm describes how we should be God fearing people and respect God’s Word. The psalm in verse 22 speaks of how God will tear you to pieces. Then, the psalms say he prepares the way. This psalm shows us the need for a savior that is Jesus Christ. God has shown His compassion by sending His son once and for all as a sacrifice for sin. The psalm describes the scene as a heavenly courtroom, with the Mighty One -- God -- as the judge. The Lord hands down an indictment against hypocrisy. The psalm indicts people who practice formalism in worship. However, Christ advises us to “worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). Psalm 69: This psalm is Messianic in nature; the commentary describes the psalm as an imprecatory psalm. This psalm has become a popular psalm over the years. Verses 1 thru 18 of the psalm speak of the need for a Savior. This savior is The Messiah, Jesus Christ. David continues to discuss the Lord’s compassion and loving-kindness. Then, verses 19 thru 29 describe David’s vindication from his enemies. The psalm ends with praise and looks forward to the Messiah and the coming of his eternal kingdom. The prevailing Messianic tone was prayer for deliverance from suffering for the Lord’s sake. Therefore, Christ was seen as the one who was persecuted for doing God’s will. Psalm 72: Psalm 72 refers to certain elements that will make up the millennial kingdom, where Christ will reign. The psalm goes on to explain how Christ will reign with righteousness throughout the whole world. This particular Messianic prophecy is seen in verse 1-3. Christ reigning with compassion is seen in verses 12-14. Furthermore, we see that the nation will prosper; this prophecy will be fulfilled through Jesus Christ, who will reign forever. The anticipation of the dominion is seen as extending from sea to sea. Finally, the psalm ends with justification for dominion. Furthermore, the psalm refers to the poor and needy being delivered. Question 2, Psalm 51 is seen as a Penitential Psalm. Psalm 51 is the fourth Penitential psalm, a prayer of confession from David. This psalm was after Davis was confronted by the prophet Nathan. In Verse 1-7 David asked the Lord to cleanse him. David felt dirty from his sin of adultery and murder. Furthermore, in verses 8-12 David asked the Lord to restore him with a steadfast spirit. David realized that God only could change his heart. Then David asks God to use him as a vessel, therefore if David’s heart was restored he could be an effective servant. David began to rebuild his relationship with the Lord. Question 3 Psalm 46 has had a profound effect on my life. The main point of this particular psalm was God is our refuge. Verse 1, “God is our refuge and strength an ever-present help in trouble”, this verse gives me comfort in the sovereignty of God. Furthermore, when I was in the middle of one of life’s storms, verse 10 was of great help. When we are in times of trouble we must be still and listen to the Lord. The psalmist wrote, “Be still, and know that I am God I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Question 4 I enjoyed the commentary of Walvoord about Psalm 46. I enjoy Eschatology and this particular psalm refers to the Millennial Age. The commentary speaks about how in verse 2 Christ will subdue the nations. Israel was chosen as His inheritance, and the subduing of nations will take place when we rule with Christ and all the other Saints in the Millennial Kingdom. Furthermore, the commentary about Psalms 62 verses 1-4 and resting in God was helpful. The commentary speaks on how David rested in the Lord; he would not be shaken because the Lord was his salvation and fortress. Question 5 Wiersbe’s commentary about Psalms 44 was helpful. Many times I want to be sure I am not boasting; therefore, verses 1-8 speak about boasting in the Lord. The commentary mentioned that God’s power gave the victory and His countenance smiles upon His people. This really speaks to me personally; we know that everything we do is because God allowed us to have victory through Jesus Christ. Then, the commentary speaks about the nation wanted no glory for itself; they wanted the Lord to receive all the glory. It is so true in ministry that everything we do should be for the glory of the Lord. Question 6 EXTERNAL LINKS Dr. Voddie Baucham.org was a very helpful external link. There are many sermons on the website to which one can listen. Dr. Baucham is an extremely effective expository preacher and teacher. I enjoy this type of teaching; Dr. Baucham teaching is Christ centered and uses systematic theology to explain the Scriptures. The message I listen to was the supremacy of Christ in Truth in a postmodern World. I have heard many sermons in my life, but this was a powerful message everyone must hear. This sermon really touched my heart. Question 7 COURSE MATERIAL I found the course material titled The Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education this particular material was created by Arthur W. Chickering and Zelda Gamson. Lord willing, one day in the future I would like to teach. Therefore, I found these 7 principles very enlightening, 1. Encourage fellow students and faculty 2. Encourage cooperation among students 3. Provide an active learning environment 4. Provide prompt feedback 5. Emphasize time on tasks 6. Articulate high expectations 7. Respect diverse talents and ways to learn Personally, I enjoyed this as it spoke to me directly; the learning environment at SCS seminary meets or exceeds the 7 principles. However, as a student, understanding the principles helped me appreciate the different formats and styles of learning. I believe having diverse learning experiences will help one grow in faith and knowledge. Question 8 This week’s post by Steve Marlin was enlightening. He mentioned how Psalm 67 was related to God’s plan for missions. I like the fact that the discussion mentioned that this particular psalm speaks about salvation and evangelism of all nations. Furthermore, the post mentioned and tied the Abrahamic promise together and how all nations will be blessed through Jesus Christ the Messiah. Personally, having a better understanding of covenant theology helps me to better understand God’s promises. I have much to learn, but I am a willing vessel for the Lord. Question 9 This week’s reading in Psalms really shows the sovereignty of God and the compassion of the Lord. Furthermore, this week’s study showed me the need of a Savior to depraved man. Many of the psalms show how we as humans are completely dependent upon the Lord. The course material of the sermon by Dr. Baucham continued in the theme of the supremacy of Christ. The method of arrangement of the course material and external links provided an excellent learning experience for me this week. Question 10 From reading Psalms 71 and the commentary from Wiersbe, it appears that the psalmist was a temple musician approaching retirement age. Therefore, the psalmist referred to God’s faithfulness and righteousness. The psalmist understands that God helped him in the past. The psalmist will put his trust in the Lord for the future. The psalm ends with the psalmist praising the Lord. This psalm should serve as an example to us who trust in the Lord throughout our life that the Lord is faithful. Read More
