ERIKSON’S THEORY OF LIFESPAN DEVELOPMENT Alarna Bartlett: 11571846 Charles Sturt University Interview Interview one Paul 1. How old are you? I am eighteen years old and having completed my high school will want to get into college and pursue my career. 2. What are some of the things that you think of? I am usually thinking of how my life is going to be in the future. You find that I look at what adults undertake daily and I am like what shall I do when I shall be of their age. My career is the most important thing. I am working hard to become a lawyer since it is a very prestigious profession. I want to become this prominent person in the society like one of the leaders from my area. This is where my thoughts are most of the time. 3. What are the things that do influence your actions? Peer influence is one of the things that influence me most. I usually want to be around my age mates and classmates. I feel like I should be recognized when I am with others. What other pears do carry out day in day out is what also part of me becomes. My parents are also influential in my life. I always admire what they do and how they carry themselves. They always tell me what they could wish me to carry out in life. Also some respectable persons in the society I always try to imitate there character. 4. What is the greatest challenge that you go through? The greatest challenge is trying to know what is best in. I always try to ensure that I do thing perfect though things are not smooth. On top of this, I always want to be loved something that I have not been able to achieve. There are always setbacks in the relationship that I get into. 5. Do you think you are ready to get to the next level of life? Yes I am very ready. I have received a very conducive environment from both my parents and teachers. I have been able to understand what I should do currently in order to have a smooth life in the future. Due to the guidance that I received I can say that I have known what it takes to make it life. The age I am is very difficult since I have undergone numerous biological changes that has seen me at a point feel that I am not myself. Interview two Jessica 1 How old are you? I am 18 years old and I consider myself as an adolescent. 2 What are some of the things that you think of? I usually think of my relationship and how to make it better. I usually think on how to make our relationship lovely and one that can be admired by many. However, I usually think what my parents do tell me. They usually guide me on how to keep up a better life to ensure that I will ensure my later life is not affected in anyway. They have been able to advise me on how career is important and this has been part of my daily thinking. On top of this I always think on how my family will look in the future. I have been able to realize that my life will heavily depend on what I do make now. So my future life is part of my daily thinking. 3 What are the things that do influence your actions? My surrounding is the greatest influencer of my life. My mother has been able to make me do some of things that I could have not have done in the rest of my life. She has shaped my life to a greater extent such that I have become a woman who can be depended on in the future. My friends also are part of the influencers as we do some of the things together. Also some of my role models have been able to influence my actions in a way. 4 What is the greatest challenge that you go through? The greatest challenge that I have undergone through is the biological changes that I underwent through. They made me almost lose my self-esteem. Also another part is trying to satisfy all my needs from relationship, education, and other needs of life. I have been trying to please my boyfriend something I feel that takes most of my school time. This has made me not to perform well sometimes hence making me rags behind. Sometimes I have misunderstandings with my parents due to the time I spend with my boyfriend than school time. 5 Do you think you are ready to get to the next level of life? Very ready. My parents and mentors have been very supportive in ensuring that what I do will influence my future live positively. I have been able to enroll in college in preparation of my future career. This is a stepping stone towards my future life as it influences most of my decisions and undertakings. I have been able to be educated the role am required to play in the society as a woman. This is part of the life that I should prepare well as it will determine the future life of me to a great extent. Task 2 Data Analysis The two interviewees are adolescents and they are preparing in the future life. They are all concerned about what the future life has been. The biological changes that they have undergone through are one of the challenges that they have in their life. They have taken the advices that they have got from the parents seriously as it has been able to influence their life. Both the interviewees are preparing or their future life it is as if from this stage of development they are moving to the next level of life and this acts as a bridge between childhood and adulthood. It is important for both of them that they must prepare for their career now. They are really struggling to identify the kind of roles that they will play in life. They are all trying to make sure that there future life will be bright as everything that they are undertaking now is directly linked towards having a bright future. Though they should be the ones that should ensure that their life is moderated and they are able to identify themselves there are externalities that influence their life. The parents and other mentors have been able to influence their actions to some extent. They are also in need of close people and they are developing the action of affection between them. This is the reason as to why both are struggling to ensure that they are keeping their relationships in a stable manner. Though at their age is not yet ready for a relationship the development has made them to have that feeling making it necessary for them to struggle. Task 3 Qualitative Report From the above data analysis most of the issues that have been identified that are in line with Erikson’s Theory of Lifespan Development. The interview was carried out on both a man and a woman who are aged 18 years. Different studies related to their stage of development were also considered. At this this age they are still adolescents who deal with fidelity as there major struggle. At this stage of development the two forces that they usually struggle to deal with is identity vs. role confusion. Those who are in this stage of development they always deal with the question “Who Am I and What Can I be?” In fact all the attributes that are brought in these level of development have been brought out well in these interview. Both the two individuals are concerned with how they appear to the rest and who they are. They are always concerned with the superego identity where they always try to deal with the outward appearance and the sameness that they will show in their life. They always try to deal with the continuous preparedness in ensuring that they will attain their carrier goals in the long term. Their ability to achieve the goal of a pleasant occupation is always their point of concern. Also as they have developed they have been able to have some sense of sexual identity that has come over sometime. However, this development has developed when they approach late development stages in the adolescent. Also, as they keep growing, they are always concerned about their role in the adult world as they approach the childhood to adulthood transition. At the beginning of this stage of development, they are always in confusion due to the experience of mixed ideas. They always have mixed ideas and feelings regarding how they will fit the society in the long term. At some point they usually experiment with different responsibilities and behaviors that they will be required at the later life. Through this observation, it is the reason why Erikson suggested that, majority of the adolescents attains the sense of identity as to who they are or who they will be in their future life. In their process of development teenagers must be able to achieve identity in gender roles, religion, occupation, and in some culture. In his theory, Erikson has been credited with identifying the term "Identity Crisis.” In his arguments he suggests that each stage of development has its own crisis. However for this one that the two belong it marks the stage one has to prepare in transition from childhood to adulthood. The transformation is very necessary since when one id in the infancy and childhood development stages, he develops many identification which need to be narrowed. However, the identity that is required by the youth is not met by these development. Since human development turning point is the reconciliation that happens between what a person has been able to attain and what the society expects of him to become. The emerging sense will be made possible with trying to guess on the past experience while anticipating the future course. When looking into the eight processes of development, the fifth stage looks like crossroads. It is the stage that tries to link the old stages with the new stages that will come. It is the stage that will set the anticipation of the future. It is the stage that will always try to determine the kind of struggle that one will face in the latter stages. The youth stage is the most unique stage of development as it acts as a bridge between the childhood and adulthood. It is at this stage that radical changes occur in one person’s life. The body changes that are accompanied by puberty, it is at this stage that one is able to search for his own intentions, and those of others. Also, it is at this stage that one is able sharpen his awareness about his/her role in the society in the later stages of life. In this stage of development, the interviewees suggested that they are confronted with the need to reestablish boundaries between themselves and those harsh world conditions that they are supposed to face on their own. The process is always challenging to them as the commitments towards their intentions are first established before the identified roles for them is formed. It is at this point that one faces the state of 'identity confusion', however, there are initiatives in the society that allow the youth to find themselves and this is referred to as 'the moratorium'. One of the problem that haunts a person into his later years is the role confusion that is experienced in the adolescent stage. However, if given the right conditions to develop Erickson believes that the adolescents should be given right time and space to freely explore and experiment and also the time to have a psychosocial moratorium that will make them make the right person. However what makes a person to have a firm sense of identity is the deep awareness and emotional stability of who one is. The process is similar to other stages where bio-psycho-social forces are at their work. No matter the circumstances that one has been raised in, one’s personal ideologies will be chosen by himself. The reasons that will make them have a conflict in their adulthood regarding political and religious orientations. Though teenagers have a responsibility that they should play in selection of their career, the parents will always have an influence in the decision they will carry out in their life. Also, in circumstances where the society is insistent, then it is possible that the teenager will acquire some external wishes which may par him/her from attaining his own discovery. From the stage once one has been able to settle in one view about himself, he/she will be in a position of integrating himself to diverse society views in the long run. Erikson suggests that when adolescent has been able to balance both perspectives of “What am I going to do with it?” and “What have I got?” Then he /she have been able to establish his identity. The development that goes on in these stage is such that at the end of the day it will have the long term effects in the future.
