Worksheet Taking Sides # 4 – Does Dating Impede Adolescent Development? PLEASE TYPE YOUR ANSWERS Briefly describe the 2 pieces of evidencethat Welsh and colleagues present to support their argument that for some teens dating is not a good idea. Do you think that based on the research that Welsh and colleagues review that dating impedes developmental adjustment for adolescents? Why or why not? Please justify your answer by evaluating the merit of the research they present.Welsh and his colleagues argue that there is a link between developmental models of depression and the developmental models associated with romantic relationships among the adolescents.

They, however, add that not all the teen relationships show this relationship, but those that do are a catalyst for depression among those involved (Rye & Drysdale, 2012). The second evidence presented is that theoretical and empirical evidence from various studies reviewed demonstrate that some of cognitive and interpersonal strategies and approaches used by teens cause depression symptoms. The insecure internal representations of the interpersonal relationships also put these people at risk of developing the depressive symptoms.

I think that from the review that has been done by the researchers, it is quite evident that dating impedes adolescent development. This is because the authors have relied on empirical studies and findings on teen dating models and development models and demonstrated a clear relationship between the two. The studies used are evidence based; hence, making the findings and conclusion made more credible and agreeable. Moreover, little speculation is done in the review, making the argument and case made by the authors valid.2. Briefly describe the 2 pieces of evidence that Furman and colleagues present to support their argument that dating is an important developmental milestone for teens.

Do you think that the research that Furman and colleagues review is compelling? Why or why not? Please justify your answer by evaluating the merit of the research they presentFurman and colleagues make the argument that dating is a very important developmental milestone among teens because of two major reasons. First, they point out that the network of relationships developed by the teens is directly linked with development and adjustment (Rye & Drysdale, 2012). Thus, those who are involved in dating will be better placed in various social settings than the counterparts who are not.

The second evidence raised is that dating helps in developing personal characteristics. The romantic experiences that teenagers are involved in influence their personal self-esteem, confidence and physical attractiveness. This is a very vital step in development. I do not agree with the argument made by the authors on the issue of dating and development among teens. This is because their argument and findings are merely speculative. In addition to that, they have only relied on correlational research to support their case that dating aids teen development.3. Imagine that you are a researcher and want to develop a study to assess whether teen dating is a good idea.

Describe what that research study would look like so that you could get all the information you need to fully assess this question. In your response discuss how big your sample would be, what variables you would assess, and what your research design would be. Pretend that money is not an object. In order to determine whether teen dating is a good idea, a study focusing on the variables that have been raised by the opposing views on the matter should be done. This research should be able to determine the relationship that exists between dating, depression and personal character.

Since this study will entail observing and evaluating teens who are dating and those who are not, it will be a cross-sectional study. Therefore, the information about the subjects at a single point of time will be recorded without manipulating the study environment. The information on depressive tendencies and personal character will be collected without the subjects being influenced to either start dating or stop dating.A sample population of 600 adolescents is to be used. An age bracket of 12-18 will be utilized.

The sample population should be a group divided into two. The first group will be made up of teens who are involved in romantic relationships and the second group will comprise of those who are not in such relationships. In each of the groups, their personal characters and level of depression or depressive tendencies will be evaluated. From the results obtained, a comparison between the two groups at that particular time of study will be done so that a valid and a more credible conclusion can be made.
