Qualitative article review Summary The of the article, The Crisis Response to a School-Based Hostage Event: A Case Study, desired to highlight on the response that a school can have on a state crisis following an act of lethal school-based violence. The participants in this case study were members of statewide crisis response team (CRT) that had experience in responding to crisis situation at public high School (Crepeau-Hobson & Summers, 2011). The technique that was used in the case study to analyze data was quite excellent.

Comparative data points were collected from each interviewee. This strategy was meant to read each interviewee’s transcript multiple times in order to come up with an initial classification system of emerging patterns and themes across all the interviewees. Data collection was through interviews because it was felt that this strategy would facilitate an increased understanding of the experiences of state crisis and even help in the establishment of a coordinated response to such a crisis. Due to the fact that the case study was focused on crisis response to a specific place, the Public High School, the researchers found out that most participants believed that an effective school-based crisis response strategy would entail sufficient knowledge of the school organizational system.

Additionally, the researchers discovered that most interviewees were of the opinion that preparation for addressing the crisis related needs of the school community was critical.AnalysisThis research process was more focused on a school situation. The researchers therefore felt that this case study should only be used as a basis for other future research in non-school environment. This is based on the understanding that crises do not just hit schools alone. In this sense, other practitioners may benefit from the experience of the school situation, and this may prove significant in effective response.

Quite significantly has been the fact that the threat to the validity of this study may have appeared in the kind of participants that were used in the research process. The participants failed to include students and parents, who are directly affected by school crises. The psychological effect of school crisis on these groups is significant, and it is important that the researchers should have considered how to respond to the psychological challenges that they go through. Having thought of how to respond to school violence, the researchers should have also considered the mental and psychological challenges of students and parents.

Indeed, the researchers admit that they had a small sample size, which was not representative of the tragedy. Additionally, the use of the interview process can be faulted in the sense that the participants in their haste to overcome the crisis may not have had clear picture of the events as they happened. In this sense, the recollection of the event could have been problematic. These findings have certain implications. The fact that response to school based violence has been poor; the researchers find it important to establish comprehensive crisis teams at school, district and community levels.

In addition, there is need to have prior crisis-related training which will help to coordinate response to tragedy. More important is the fact that mental health professionals have to be equipped in order to deal with challenges related to the psychological health of students and parents affected by the crisis. This is in response to the fact that most students may develop nightmares and other intrusive thoughts due to such tragedies.ReferencesCrepeau-Hobson, & Summers. (2011).
