Media and Crime Ashley Simpson Media and Crime Log—Entry II Media and Crime Log—Entry II The Los Angeles Timesdated 1st October 2012 reported a shocking criminal story about a heist in the California State Mining and Mineral Museum located in Mariposa. According to the news some dangerous masked men armed with pickaxes and guns entered the museum and threatened the museum personnel and conservator at around 4pm on Friday, 28th September. The news reports that the robbers went away a hefty amount of historical crystalline gold, gems and other museum property worth as much as $2 million.

According to the news, “The robbers went after the famed Fricot Nugget, an almost 14-pound swirl of crystalline gold believed to be the biggest chunk to survive the Gold Rush, but went away with a highly identifiable chunk of gold” (Roy Stearns, L.A. Times). The Nugget was protected in an iron vault which protected it. The alarms sounded as soon as the robbers tried to break into the vault which closed it, but the robbers went away with other precious gold, gems and minerals of the museum.

The museum personnel stated it was a very fast robbery and it all happened just in few minutes. This news creates a feeling among the general public that although museums and other places having precious items and property are equipped with modern alarm and security systems, these can be bypassed by the armed and committed burglars easily, and perhaps humans are incapable to act ahead of the weapons. In the above stated report, the sociology theory of crime is most appropriate as it encompasses a wide range of society factors and their relationship with the criminal behavior.

Accordingly a person is motivated to commit the crime due to social conditions and opportunity to commit the crime. The people involved in the crime may be subject to criminal behavior due to social injustice, inequality, unable to achieve individual objectives by fair means, peer pressure, and social disorganization. This of course is supplemented by the opportunity to commit crime and support of others in the form of criminal cultures including gangs.Another important and notable crime story appeared in the September 28th publication of USA Today that reported a shooting at the Accent Signage Systems Inc.

that left 4 officers and the shooter himself dead. The business owner also died in this incident. Three of four shooting victims were admitted to hospital in a serious condition with gunshot wounds. According to the news the gunman shot himself after the shooting. No details are yet released about the gunman but people told police that they know all the people who died in the incident, including the gunman. A woman also told that the shooter was an en employee at the business. The incident was seen by some people and employees of the business working at the same block from other buildings.

They said it was terrifying and shocking to see such a thing happening just a few distance away. This news obviously created fear and affrighted feelings among the readers as they realize that the life cannot be regarded as safe and some insane shooter can broke into a work or living place and cause violence and deaths. It seems as if the psychological theory is more applicable here. It emphasizes the freewill power and the role played by cognitive development, parents, oversight, neglect and abuse in the individual’s tendency to commit a crime.

An individual knows what is right and what is wrong and free to choose what he wants. This psychological theory must also be accompanied by the sociological theories to fully understand the human behavior.ReferencesLos Angeles Times. (2012, 10 1).
