Some of the main categories of personality assessment include self-report measures of personality, projective methods, and behavioral assessment. Let us discuss all of them in some detail.Self-Report Measure of Personality In his method of personality assessment, a test is administered either in pencil-and-paper format or on a computer system which measures the personal characteristics, views, and ideologies of a person (Cherry, n.d.).

Generally, a written questionnaire is the primary way to collect information (Razavi, n.d.).Example: One of the main examples of this category is MMPI-2. This is the test that contains over 500 questions on different topics that help in assessment of a person’s religious views, psychological health, sexual behaviors, political and social thoughts, and abnormal behaviors.Projective Methods Using projective methods, researchers provide people with images and shapes to get their responses regarding those ambiguous stimuli.

As Smeltzer (2011) states, “projective testing focuses on making sense of the individual’s spontaneous responses”. These indirect methods allow the respondents with the freedom of choice which they can use to interpret the subject and submit their responses. Example:One of the main examples of this category is ‘Washington University Sentence Completion Test’. This test provides a reliable measure of self-concept and is based on Loevinger’s theory of ego development. In this test, examinees are asked to complete the sentences using their own perception.

Behavioral AssessmentThis method of personality assessment was introduced by B.F. Skinner in 1930. Using behavioral assessment technique, researchers try to examine the behavior of a person using interviews or observational methods. Example:‘Controlled observation’ is one of the main behavioral assessment methods. Researchers often set controlled conditions for examinees to check how they behave in those conditions. They also look at the frequency of some particular behaviors during the process of observation.
