and Number Depression The brain is one of the strangest organs. Even though medicine has made big steps, there is still a lot about the brain that we don’t know. For example, when the brain gets sick, sometimes there is no cure. Instead, doctors can help the person control the illness or injury by managing the symptoms. Depression is a serious illness in the brain that doctors have not been able to find a cure for, but they do know how to handle it. In an article called “What is Depression?

” about 10 percent of the population has some form of depression(“What is Depression?”). There are big differences between clinical depression and feeling sad or upset. Clinical depression is caused by a few things. Biology or nature is a factor because people with depression have problems with neurotransmitters, hormone levels, and the limbic system(“Biological Causes of Depression”). There is something wrong in the person’s brain which changes their mood. Also, genetics has an important role too since the the chances for getting depression goes up when a person has a relative who has clinical depression (“Genetic Causes of Depression”).

There is even some evidence which shows that there might be a depression gene. Finally, the environment has a role in the illness because stressful and upsetting events can cause depression too (“Environmental Causes of Depression”). Depression does not really have a progression, but there are symptoms which are similar for everyone who has it. Doctors have found that there are different levels of the illness, and if nothing is done to help, the illness can get so bad that it hurts a person’s daily life.

Sometimes, the illness can lead to suicide. The most common symptoms of depression are feeling sad or down, no interest in things that a person once liked, sleeping too much or too little, eating too much or too little, and the depression lasts more than a few days or weeks(“Diagnosis of Clinical Depression”). With depression, there is no cure, but there is treatment which can help to manage the symptoms. Two treatments are medication and Electroconvulsive therapy. There are many medications for treating depression such as Prozac, Effexor, and Zoloft.

Electroconvulsive therapy is a treatment method where the patients brain gets shocked. This is used for people who do not want to take medication or are not able to take medication for some reason(“How Depression is Treated”). Sometimes, people think that depression is not a serious brain illness, but that is not true. Most doctors tell their patients to try to live their lives the same, to not stay away from family, friends, and activities because this happens a lot with this illness. Maybe the only big change a person might have to make in their life when they have this illness is to make sure that they follow the treatment that their doctors give them because it will help them to feel better in the future.

For some people, remembering to take pills or to show up to doctor appointments may be hard, so they will have to really try and make the effort to change their lives in this way.
