Same Sex Marriages Order No. 837121 Introduction Marriages in general are always welcome and are considered to be a good thing, but when it comes to same sex marriages, then eyebrows are lifted in question. However, in these contemporary times, such marriages seem to be becoming more common. Seemingly, there seems to be a shift in our thinking, culture and a sort of change in attitude of how we view gays and lesbians today. Today, people are more open about there sexual orientation and therefore it has become more acceptable these days.

Marriage is an institution where two people are committed to each other with unconditional love and understanding. In this paper, I will be discussing the three approaches to better understand the concept of same sex marriages and try to find solutions to the existing problem. Theological Voluntarist Approach In simple terms, the ‘Theological Voluntarist Approach’ is an approach which states that God requires people to be moral and every action of theirs must be both voluntary and moral. In this approach, a theological voluntarist expects God to approve of the action before it is done.

It is also known as the ‘Divine Command Theory,’ because for any action to take place, Gods intervention is necessary. 2 Non- Objectivist Approach According to the Non- Objectivist Approach, there are no true moral principles, neither moral facts nor any genuine arguments about a particular problem. Moral values are not dependent on anything in particular and are not governed by Divine or human will. The moral good of the person is not influenced by human emotions and feelings. Any stand that an individual takes, be it morally, spiritually, socially or politically are all in relation to the individual themselves and does not depend on the opinion of others. (Matt Slick www.carm.org/what-relativism) This approach is further sub-divided into: 1) Cognitive relativism - The system of truth is treated equally. 2) Moral/Ethical Relativism – Every moral is relative to the social circle that constructed them. 3) Situational Relativism – The right or wrong of things is directly related to a particular situation.

While on one hand there are people opposed to gay marriages, there are others who condone it.

In my opinion, after I did a lot of research and from evidence of the many stories I read, I took a stand which was defending the rights of gays. I feel that every individual is unique and has every right to their own opinions and decisions because they are the ones who are going to fulfill the outcomes too. To support my opinion that gays too have rights which should be defended, the legalizing of gay marriages should find a voice in the courtroom. The Approach I would advocate here is the ‘Relativism Approach’ where everyone’s views are treated equally and no opinion is right or wrong.

I see tolerance in this approach because it denies authority to any one individual or group. Such couples would also take the responsibility for their actions and their outcomes, so I don’t think anyone else’s opinion really matters. In case a problem arises about rearing children, it is entirely up to the gay couple to find reasonable solutions to it. Therefore, in my opinion I feel that gays should be allowed to live their lives the way they want….after all we have just one life to live!
