Drinking Behavior amongst British and European Students - Dissertation Example

The survey consisted of a 6 part questionnaire. The first part of the questionnaire gathered demographic information. The second part of the questionnaire consisted of 60 five-point Likert scale questions testing the personality of type of the respondents. The third and fourth parts of the questionnaire consisted of a four-point Likert scale testing for a metacognitive model of problem drinking. Part five of the questionnaire consisted of fifteen five-point Likert scale questions designed around the Scale for Measurement of Socio-Cultural Attitudes Towards Alcohol.

The last part of the questionnaire involved an inquiry into the respondent’s monthly drinking habits.Using correlational and hierarchical multiple regression analyses the results indicated that the student's personality and socio-cultural background can significantly affect drinking behavior. Although positive and negative metacognitive beliefs could affect the participating British and European students’ drinking behavior, these two factors are considered independent contributors of drinking behavior and can therefore be corrected by reversing the students’ false beliefs.

Aside from the limited number of research survey respondents, the qualified research survey respondents in this study include only the British and European nationals who are permanently residing in the UK and are currently enrolled at Kingston University. For this reason, future research should consider the need to increase the sample size to minimize the risk of generating biased and inaccurate statistical results.Excessive alcohol consumption among college and university students is linked to several risk factors including fatalities, arrests, injuries, assaults, and generally disrupts social stability on college campuses (Turrisi, Mallett & Mastroleo, 2006).

  As a result, academicians and educationists have increasingly turned attention to the problem of student alcoholism to protect the welfare of students. Student alcoholism is also an area of interest to scholars and sociologists who want to understand human behavior in an environment of peer pressure (Russell-Bennett, Hogan & Perks, 2010; O’Malley & Johnston, 2002).
