The waves are not the normal sea waves due to their long wavelength (Rooney 108). The waves that are formed through activities such as landslides and volcanic eruptions are sustained by gravity and they eventually causes the displacement. Displacement is also caused by the movement of normal faults.
Tsunami has caused many damages ranging from destruction of buildings and injuries and even death to the people around the oceans (Kajikawa 98). The displacements have also caused long term damages to the areas where it is experienced with damage on the infrastructure and disorganization of the communities around.
The main means of surviving the tragedy is by moving to higher grounds were there cannot be reached by the waves (Rooney 64). Many warnings about tsunami have been issued for instance in Thailand were a family warned the others only minutes before the tsunami occurred (Kajikawa 57). This paper gives an explanation of the formation, occurrences, causes, and how an earthquake forms through the tectonic plate theory. The crust and the uppermost part of the mantle are made up the tectonic plates that float over the molten rocks. The plates are in a continuous motion and move over and under each other colliding at each other, which can result in a stretch, bend, and breakings.
This implies that even though earthquakes are natural occurrences and cannot be prevented; there are still ways through which they can either be deviated. It is also important for the government officials from countries which are risk experiencing this natural occurrence to come up with measures that will ensure security among its citizens.
Earthquakes are caused by a number of sources including; collision of meteorites with the earth surfaces, lower magnitude ice quakes produced by variation of temperature in glaziers and large scale landslides. There are other earthquakes that are caused by manmade seismic sources, for example: excessive mining activity, nuclear and industrial actions or explosions (Lee p.346).
Many regions of Japan have experienced serious earthquakes and tidal waves. The worst earthquake in Japan’s history is the Great Kanto Earthquake, which struck Kanto Plain near Tokyo in 1923. In this earthquake, over 100, 000 people lost their lives.
The following discussion has been made in order to define the information in the investigation and to put it into context with the events that have taken place in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 in Japan.
In 1960, Chile recorded the largest earthquake in the 20th century on May 22, 1960 to 6 June. It originated from the Southern Chile coast and resulted to massive problems and fatalities in the country as the result of tsunamis that it created, in distant areas in Pacific coastal areas.
The paper uses a practical approach to examine earthquakes by evaluating five specific cases. These cases include major events in the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake, the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, the 1964 Alaska Earthquake, the 1960 Chilean Earthquake and the 2004 Sumatra Earthquake.
