The aftermath of the landslide is budgeting to fix the damage which will hinder development of Ohio as a state. While damage to property or injury to humans was not registered, disruption of the road system continues to mount economic setbacks (Ohio State Wide Imagery Program 1).
The affected area is made up of colluvium above the geologic formations like the Ordovician age Kope formation. With retreating glaciers from previous glacial ages, clayey is deposited around lakes formed as a result. The instability of the underlying rock is caused by the weakening bonds between the retreating solid ice and the spaces existing between the particular structures of the underlying rock. The forces associated with the contextual landslide involve gravitational pull of dense earth as opposed to the underlying weak bedrock (Ohio State Wide Imagery Program, 1). The dense and heavier surface slides over the weak bed rock or exerts pressure on it resulting into a horizontal ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

...be exposing a person to risk of whatever nature. Advantages of GIS In a landslide study, data on hydrology, slope steepness, rock composition, and other factors can be combined with data on previous landslide to determine the conditions under which landslide are likely to occur (Saha, et al, 2005). To analyze all possible factors with manual techniques is almost next to impossible, therefore, only two factors can be analyzed in normal circumstance, after which the composite map are combined with the landslide inventory map. However with GIS, it is possible to analyze various factors that are associated with present conditions and historical events, including presence of...

Piezometers( to measure the water table to monitoring landslide)
...PIEZOMETERS FOR MEASURING THE WATER TABLE TO MONITOR LANDSLIDES Introduction The presence of ground water in a rock slope can have a detrimentaleffect on the soil stability of the slope by decreasing the shear strength of potential failure surfaces. Water pressure in tension cracks, small animal borings or similar almost vertical fissures and discontinuities, reduces stability by increasing the forces that induce landslides. It is important that “measurement or calculation of this water pressure forms part of site investigations for stability studies” (Wyllie et al, 2004: 109). Drainage is one of the most effective and economical means available for improving the stability of rock slopes. Appropriate...

Their fears were raised by the occurrence of a small landslide on the seventh tip the same year. However, its impact was not big therefore did not cause any disturbance to the Aberfan village. They consulted NCB and raised their fears. Aberfan residents also warned NCB of the dangers that the tips posed. As an example they referred to the tips which were left unattended. For instance the fifth tip caught fire in 1958 which was still burning into the 1960’s (Laurie 1977). Mining debris are usually very volatile...
