Love Relationship Name Course Date 1. Compare and contrast two different theoretical approaches to love from weeks 1-6 of the course. According to some scholars from republic such as Plato there is a clear distinction between the approaches that count towards love. There is a clear distinction between the two types of love; this helps to explain more about the approaches to love. Theoretically love if viewed from than two theories; the erotic theory and the romanticized theory. These theories are both felt by friends and individuals or a caring love that is devoid from any connotation or sexual desire. According to Plato, if this was the case then love was called tyrant love. When love is considered as the empire of shaping an individual’s life, then it bears the tyrant profile. Plato commented that human beings are forced to remove any tyrant profile love that was formulated because of subjection to the grip of impulses and love. Love dominants like a tyrant within an individual in all lawlessness and anarchy; thus when love becomes a monarch it will lead an individual whom it controls as though he is a car, to all the kinds of daring (Price 1989). Plato emphasized that when trying to differentiate between desirable love that is found in friendship them the dominance of filial love and also explained that no-erotic love has the capacity to bring human beings together in the community or society as well as finishing the society. This does not mean that Plato dismissed erotic love but he placed it in a lower position subsidiary to friendship. Secomb’s theory of love was centralized on individual basis as compared to that of Plato’s disclosure that is very much emphasized on societal and social systems of love (Secomb 1995). This system is whereby man was able to find peace and harmony through love. The theory was more emphasized by Christianity perspective of virtue love; such as loving one’s neighbor as one loves himself. This social love was aimed at creating love persuasions among members of s certain society so that harmony could be created. According to Secomb Christianity is the best method form of expressing sublimated sexuality kind of love. He also does not recommend loving one’s neighbor much less than loving oneself. Secomb was able to identify that man loves several things as well as stated that one’s love of life shall be the highest love that one can ever attain. As of Plato, he explains that love is not only based on the outward form that it is shown to people but it is a composition of several factors such s childhood development, cognitive development and the nature of the environment that an individual is brought in. according to Plato, love in human beings is love that is manifested to find emotional satisfaction as well as enormous personal interest in their relationship without the addition of sexual intercourse or any human contact. He also stated that the virtue of love is in many ways but the most specific one is that this love should be able to bring good things and happiness. Secomb states that respect is the best bridge to love since love is contained in recognition of your neighbor’s love which should be always a positive love. This scholar was not able to recognize that many individuals missed love, thus Christianity should play the role of lyrical religion that creates positive gap between people and the society. He also found suggestive and ambiguous that the proponents of love something that can be spoke from memory to hope for a change in life. According to Plato theory of love he states that an individual demand to find love if internal and cannot be triggered by other forces since it is an inner evaluation of loneliness. Love is centralized to many other factors such as the source of power and the intention of the love, but the power contributing to love bears the biggest role when finding love. Despite that fact that several theories are there to bring the meaning and intention of love, others are based on the assumptions that underlie love. Plato and Secomb are able to highlight what is need to both individual and societal love but the other are based on friendship love that is concentrated in individual terms. 2. Discuss the discourse of romantic love The disclosure of romantic love is coupled with several romantic stages. This type of relationship is based on emotions like those of intimacy, compassion and appreciation rather than physical intimacy. Disclosures of romantic love in its early stages are characterized by emotional anxiety and uncertainty that love is something that once given cannot be returned. Romantic love is like being on one side of a canyon and the other mate is the other side. Within an organized relationship, romantic love is defined as optimizing and freeing of intimacy in a particular luxurious way or in a greater irony, peril or spirituality to romantic relationship (Nussbaum 1994). This disclosure is able to define the conflicts in culture that affect romantic aspects of love such as betrothals and arranged marriage. It has been noted that close and strong disclosure of romantic love can exist between partners in a well organized and arranged marriage. There are several theories of romantic love such as that of secomb in which it is combined by sexual desires and likings, but other major theories offer more insights on the pertinent of romantic disclosures. According to Plato romantic love is one that leads to marriage but its validity is determined by the societal support of the relationship. Hs also stated that many people in the world posses this type of love in their marriages. This type of love is only found in couples who go to an extent of having bodily contact. According to disclosure of romantic love self disclosure is an important aspect of love that can be dominated by many downfalls. For example, if self-disclosure is not able to be defined then there is high risk of the relationship leading to an intimacy relation. The secrets that are contained in a well defined and constituted romantic relationship are well geared towards an open and mutual relationship that both parties are able to understand the aims of the relationship but it the disclosures (secrets) are not defined and protected among the individuals then there is high risk of the relationship falling apart. A romantic relationship is composed of several kinds of love in it such as casual and friendly love. All that is posed romantic relationship is able to meet the demands of that type of relationship such as sexual affairs and contacts. It’s greatly misinterpreted that the mutual gains in a romantic love is attributed by the demands or wants of the parties, contrarily, this is not true as a romantic relationship is pulled together by the different disclosures and agreements made by the partners in love and not the physical explanation of the ideas or feeing that may later arise during the relationship. Disclosure of romantic love is based on the nature of love relationship that exists between the parties such as the future of the relationship-marriage, the capital involvement in the relationship and the mutual understanding of the partners in love. This means that all the disclosures underlined in romantic relationship should be backed with mutual understanding and secrecy contacts of both parties. Disclosures of romantic love should be linked to the interest of the relationship and not the demands of the love as the demands are deemed to change but the discourses of secretes cannot change over time if the love is well cemented. 3. Is romantic love a code, a script, a narrative or a delusion, or, all of the above Romantic love is considered as a code that is linked between the parties involved in the love affair. A code is a chain of stings that constitute an outcome at later stages ruing love. For example, romantic love is said to be code like since it is a chain of activities that makes the love called romantic. Romantic activities are many hence act like a code that one has to follow to have a better outcome (Nicholson 1999). A script is a written scroll of paper within a significant meaning that can be recited or sung. This meaning defines itself to romantic love whereby the love birds involved have a common understanding of what their love should be based on such as the disclosure of the love they hold (Secomb 2010). Romantic love is not a narration of any action since it is inwardly expressed. Hence rules out being like a narrative. Romantic love sometimes shows itself like a delusion that is able to show the false side of the love because other parties are not scriptive to the intention of having romantic relation thus, only show their needs and demands in the relationship. Delusion in a romantic relationship is evident when the parties have huge difference is their love perceptions and are also not able to hold disclosures in their relationship.
