Sexually Repressed WomenWhile dealing with sexually repressed women, Freud came up with the three parts of self. Freud believes that the psychic mind is made up of the id, the ego and the super-ego. He observes that the three parts together make up the mind. According to Freud, the mind is made up of the conscious and the unconscious mind. The id, which operates at the unconscious, is responsible for Eros and Thanatos feelings. Eros (life) instincts usually operate at a higher libido (energy level) than Thanatos (death instinct) so that it is able to overcome suicide or murder tendencies.

He believed that sexually repressed women cope with deprivation through the ego and the super-ego, stressing on such matters (Davies and Dirda 70). As they feel the urge for gratification, the ego seeks socially acceptable ways of doing so while the super ego seeks to clarify the morality of such inclinations. Any repression is a product of a counter-balance of the id, the ego, and the super-ego, at least in normal individuals. Death instinct (Thanatos) lives within the erotic desires as they are created in the subconscious, but the conscious balances through a logical path.

Freud connects civilization and violence through a defense mechanism called sublimation. After aggressive and sexual instincts have been blocked, they do not go away, but the mind refuses to remember them through suppression. They may resurface later.Response to Question 2: HegelAccording to Hegel, the understanding of self begins with self-consciousness. One can only be self-conscious if the individual assesses himself through the prism of another person. That way, what one perceives as subjects may be perceived as objects by other subjects.

The level of self-awareness is seen as relative to the extent of conformity of the knowledge prescribed to as opposed to absolute universality. Writing a diary is a way of how we develop over time as the activity allows us to express thoughts from our minds. Hegel’s approach to the philosophy of history shows that he understood low points as those in which there are less freedom and unconstitutional governance in which there is no basis for any applicable law. Low points are seen as orchestrated by unethical individuals whose actions cannot pass the test of morality.

Response to Question 3: Karl MarxKarl Marx had very little confidence in capitalism. On that note, did not believe that one could discover himself/herself in capitalistic work. He saw capitalism as the oppression of the masses by a minority who wield the power to the factors of production. The proletariat class and the bourgeoisie are distinct classes. His romantic ideal is that in order to address the question about the self, there was a need for a socio-political system in which equity for all individuals is a cornerstone.

His notion of self-alienation was that man is responsible for creating the force that has dominance over them. The kind of revolution that Karl Marx wanted was that the working class should rise against the property owners so that there may be some form of equity in the society.
