Teacher Persuasive essay Introduction The case is about an intern William who was asked by Timothy to provide his account username and password for Timothy to have an access to the university database. William is not that important to Timothy except for his university account information and William is torn on how to refuse Timothy’s demand of his university account information. Timothy could use the following argument of dismissing William’s reservation of giving him access, that it does not hurt anybody and that William should give something in return for his internships. In order to convince Timothy to refrain from asking William’s university account information, William could argue that it is also not worth it for Timothy to ask for his university access information because it could also potentially put Timothy in trouble as much as it would to William. He could run the risk of tarnishing his reputation, face criminal litigation that would ultimately lead to loss of business as much as it would jeopardize William’s tenure in the university with the possibility of being expelled because of giving out access to university database. Body As an opening argument, Timothy will likely persuade William that nobody will know that he gave his username and password to him unless of course if William will tell it to the school administrators or to any person. He may even dismiss it as unimportant because he is merely asking for words – a username and password which he can also have from other students if he chose to. He can also rebuke William that he is lucky because he had been “trusted” by Timothy to be his source of access to the university database. As a counter argument, William however does not have to go back to the argument raised by Timothy of not worrying to be caught because no one has to know and that it can be easily be kept a secret. Instead, he can counter argue that it is under school’s regulation that username and passwords are not to be shared with anyone. He can cite that he might be dismissed from the university for sharing his personal account information effectively forfeiting all the units he earned from the university. It would also help his cause in persuading Timothy to refrain from asking his username and password to mention that he may also be held liable for asking his username and password to have an access to university database. That to prevent them both from being held liable of using university access illegally, it would be better to be on the safe side of things of not doing anything that break rules. It is expected that Timothy will persist and will even pressure William that this “worry” of his is baseless. He may cite the argument that giving Timothy his access does not hurt or harm somebody so how could it become illegal and may rebuke William for the fuss about the issue. As a counterargument, William can cite the reason that it is not others that he is worried about but them especially to him as a student who is still charting his future. He can cite the counter argument that he wanted to start his career right by doing the right thing with the hope that it will reflect positively on him and that his future employers (subtly hinting to Timothy) will appreciate his integrity. This integrity of his will also apply on other areas of work indicating that he can be trusted to do things right. For Timothy, it would mean having a good employee who would do the right things for him and thereby, making William more useful other than his university access. Timothy however may further his persuasion by using utilitarian exchange. The argument may go along with the line that if William wants something from him such as his internship, then he (William) should provide something that Timothy needs otherwise, William is pretty much useless as Timothy can get other interns anyway. In this case, Timothy wants an access to university database to make William useful to him. William can then use this line of argument to persuade Timothy that it is not advantageous to him and that the exchange is inimical to him because the potential harm of losing his college education far outweighs the benefit of getting an internship. In trying to persuade Timothy, William could also point that it is also risky for Timothy to ask for his university database access. William could argue to Timothy that obtaining an intern or third party’s university access is illegal that he also runs the danger of litigation, tarnished reputation and ultimately, loss of business. William could also point out that it is also not worth it for William to go the trouble of litigation and possible loss of business just because of a university access. Instead, he could make use of William’s skills and knowledge. William is college educated and is willing to learn the rudiments of any job and that would make him useful other than his university username and password. On the end of Timothy, he should also appreciate William’s sense of integrity. That should be communicated to him that William can be trusted with sensitive responsibility and that he does not readily give in to temptation and expedience. This should signal to him that William would make a good intern. Timothy’s persuasion of dismissing William’s reservation about giving his university access, that it does not hurt anybody, that William should give something in return to Timothy is not a valid reason to justify the risk that William has to go through just to get his internship. William could instead dissuade Timothy that it is also dangerous to him to ask for William’s access as it is to William. The proposed course of action could also be presented as advantageous to Timothy as well because that would save him from potential trouble. If William can convince Timothy that he is also helping him realize that should university administrators will find out that he asked and obtained his password, he would also be hold accountable as an employer and possibly, be even criminally charged. William can also argue the possibility that at the worst case scenario, Timothy may be more accountable in that situation because it was him who demanded his account information which in effect was asked in duress. On the end of William, the administrator might see it that William was put in pressure and may even exempt him or be given a lesser penalty while the burden of the punishment may be slapped against Timothy because he was the one who prodded William to give his university account information. In this situation, Timothy has more to lose because he has a business and a reputation to protect not to mention a potential lawsuit to face. While this may jeopardize the continuing education of William under the pain of expulsion, he may still appeal it to school administration that he decided under duress while William has no option for appeal. School official might pity William and give him a second chance to spare him from expulsion. On the end of Timothy, there is no redemption for him because he may be seen as the source of guilt and the sole culprit. Worst, this will surely have repercussion on Timothy’s reputation costing him money and his business. In this kind of argument, William is also helping Timothy to realize that it is also not worth for Timothy to ask for his university access information.
