Utilitarianism Relationship between Utilitarian and pertinent issues (i.e. right-to-work, fairness in advertising)Utilitarian ethics focuses on the practicality of the utility is focused on and the maximization of benefits. Pertinent issues in society are based on the concept of the end product and how practical it is or whether it will reduce the suffering of the human being. These issues, for example, justice, fairness, and rights among others are what society is concerned about. Through utilitarian ethics, these pertinent issues gain justification and are seen to have great importance to humans (Smith 13).

Everyone has a right to work as it is a means to an end and it reduces suffering. When people are accorded this right, they are able to earn money to purchase food, clothing, and other basic human goods necessary to make them comfortable hence reducing their suffering through these benefits. If there was no utilitarian ethics here, then people would continue suffering for lack of comfort and benefits. Fairness and justice are also related to utilitarianism in that utilitarianism tries to ensure that actions are not only practical but morally acceptable and will not cause suffering.

This is basically what fairness and justice are all about, ensuring that people are comfortable and do not suffer as a result of the impracticality of the situation. If utilitarian ethics are upheld and utilized by society, then unfairness and injustice in issues such as work, school, and other important areas of society will be eliminated. People will be ensuring that their actions towards others do not cause any form of suffering and are practical enough.
