Introduction This paper delves in the analysis of the theories of Preble’s Art forms. Under this context, it is important to highlight that the theory discussed falls under part two of the book which majors in the media of art. Under this, there are three theories that will be discussed as they come out clearly in the book. It is also important to highlight that chapter five of the book majorly deals with the evaluation of art. The three theories that are the points of focus as well as attention in the book are well discussed below: The theories of art in chapter five Formal theories In this theory, the point that it focuses on so much and that it explains as well as envisages is the makeup and the constitution of the work of art. The theory tends to explains much on how the piece of art could have possibly having been affected in one way o the other by the earlier artisans in their creativity and artistic works. It therefore gives what made the piece of art be the way it is and why it was designed in the particular form that it is (Patrick 2009). Expressive Theories This theory as the name suggests is quite axiomatic and obvious that the theory is focusing in expression. Under this expression, it is to say that the expression is with the aim of worldwide marketing as well as publicity. It therefore deals with the expression of personality for the popularity and to make the piece of work well known to the whole world (Patrick 2010). Sociocultural Theories This theory focuses on the contemporary aspects of the society. In the discussion, the theory discusses the various environmental issues that influence the works of art, the effect of culture (way of living) on art as well as the effect of the political state or the ruling class on art. It is also important to highlight that economic factors are also having a significant influence on the pieces of art (Suzzane 2010). In the second part of the paper, the paper will delves so much on the one art that is designed and match very well the various theories that have been well discussed in the earlier parts of the paper. The paper therefore discusses on The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian completed 1475; oil on poplar. It is important to highlight that this is a piece of art that was designed and created by Jay Poll Aiuolo, Piero del, and Poll Aiuolo, Antonio del. It is noted in the National Gallery that the completion of the painting of the art was in 1475 (Berys 2003). The size of the piece of art is 291.5 cm × 202.6 cm. the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian was created and preserved in the national gallery to epitomize as well as give the true story about the great as well as the golden legend of Saint Sebastian. This was a true Christian who was sentenced to death because of the strong faith that he had. This is a very vital symbol of the true Christian that helps in fostering the faith of the other Christians who are also hopeful for the kingdom of God (Patrick 2010). This piece of art is colored in light painting for the clear visibility. It is important to highlight that the materials that were used in the creativity were rocks, oils as well as the woods. The piece of art is composed of five archers and the sixth statute is the martyr who was sentenced to death after the he had been identified as a strong Christian who stood firm in his gospel ministry. The foreground of the statuette is three archers, who have three distinctive postures that they take. This is o show how solid they were during the incident that occurred during the times of the Roman Empire. The other creative artistic designs that are in the art are seen through the stone curving and also through the multiple angles that they took. It is important to note that the painting was considered quite significant and was thereby preserved in an oratory by the Pucci family. It is important to note that the painting was located in a raised ground that is said to be dominating a very large and vast landscape. The authority (Emperor Diocletian) is epitomized between the two rocks kind of giving commands to the soldiers to execute their duty (persecution). Sebastian seems to be bare-chested and five arrows seem to have pieced and stubbed him. It is important to highlight that the arrow symbolized the plague while five wounds as well as the bruises that were suffered by the Lord Jesus Christ were signaled by the four arrows that pieced his limb (Berys 2003). In the showing of the three dimensionality of the statute, it is clearly evident as it sculpted that the poses that the archers took can clearly vindicate this. With this, the major assumption that is made is that he entered the kingdom of God and therefore the other faithful and hopefuls should as well be strong in faith to make them enter the kingdom of God. The statute has a lot of significance as well as implications both politically, culturally, socially as well as economically. It is important to highlight that this statuette is politically significant to the people in that it reminds the other people as well as the current ruling class of the bad forms of governance that were practiced initially (Suzzane 2010). Culturally, it shows how the people lived in the olden days with so much oppression to the people who were not allowed to express their religious freedoms as well as rights. It is economically significant to the economy of the particular state that it located. This is because there are very many persons who come from various parts of the world just to sight see the statuette. These people have to get accommodation and catering services from the destination area thereby spending money at the destination. The money that s received through this form of tourism is hereby used in the development and also expansion of the various sectors of the economy. It is also important to reiterate the fact that this painting is in the National gallery in London. They are also important for the historic preservation of culture and tradition (Patrick 2010). Another impact that is quite obvious is the emotional impact of the statute to the followers of Christ who were strong in faith together with Sebastian as well as the family felt the pain and sorrow for the loss of their loved one. The artist, Hans has been known to be one of the best painters. The gestures that are shown in the statuette give various impressions to the people. The just as it is highlighted above, one of the impressions that come out so clearly is the five wounds that Jesus received. This is shown by the arrows that pierced through his limbs as it is in the statuette (Patrick 2009). The statuette was painted by Hans Memling. He was a citizen of the republic of Bruges in the year 1465 where he did his painting. He died in the 1494. The statuette is however said to be owned Antonio Pollaiuolo who was born in 1432 and succumbed to death in 1498. He was a citizen of Italy who also did painting and sculpturing. He was also a goldsmith and an engraver. His brother was Piero del Pollaiuolo. History has it that most of the sculptors were done by them including the landscape as well as the portrait. These have been in study for a very long period of time (Patrick 2010). The title of the artwork does not change my perception of the piece of art. It makes the creativity more luring to know much on how it was done. The artist is strongly related to the subject in the sense that it majors on the works of art and to the luck; the artist is actually a sculptor together with his brother. This is therefore a positive coincidence to the topic. In the speeches that was at one point given by the artist about his work of art, he said, “Although old, the monograph by Maud Cruttwell, Antonio Pollaiuolo (1907), is still useful. Pollaiuolo's sculpture is discussed in John Pope-Hennessy, Italian Renaissance Sculpture (1958), and Charles Seymour, Sculpture in Italy, 1400-1500 (1966)”. This shows that he also believed that his work was also of some positive significance to the people in one way or the other (Suzzane 2010). Finally, it is important to highlight that this piece of art relates with other works in the gallery such as the Eyck’s Arnolfini piece of art, the Portrait, Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, Turner’s Fighting Temeraire and Velázquez’s Rokeby Venus (Berys 2003).
