Introduction: They say, ‘God condemns for life, by giving those a broken heart!’—Ask me, how to live with a broken heart. I am not a defeated lover, but a defeated dog lover. I loved my Labrador Retriever immensely. “Amicable and sociable, [my] Labrador Retriever is a playful companion and a calm house dog.” (Labrador….) Right from the day I acquired her, I was always seized with a feeling that why the lifespan of this breed of dogs should be 10-12 years only. I complain to God about His scheme of things that such a lovely pet should live only for 12 years. My dog was already 7 years old and I remain anxiety-filled, what would happen to her in the next few years? The very thought of losing my companion increased the palpitation of my heart. She arrived at our house providentially. My destiny must have played its part. I was a fifth-grade student and I still remembered that pleasant afternoon. When I jumped out my school bus and entered the compound of my house, to my great surprise I saw the white figure lying on the green grass carpet of the lawn and enjoy the sunshine. I am a compulsive lover of dog, and instinctively I hailed, ‘Hey, White!’ She came to me running and began to lick my shoes as if she knew me since ages. It was love at first sight! She became the family acquisition and my parents and my elder sister welcomed the addition to the family. White infused great enthusiasm in our family from the very first day. Her silky hair, her brown eyes, shy nature and her unpredictable activities brought cheer to our life. Two years rolled by. White was the inseparable part of my life. Somewhere I had read that regular exercise was needed to keep Labrador Retriever breed healthy and occupied. White seemed to know more about her physical requirements than me. Her running around along with me was amazing to the point of irritation sometimes! She slept by the side of my bed; she took food with me. She carefully watched as I dressed and got ready for the school. She saw me off at the bus stop and my mates were more eager to say ‘hello’ to her every morning. She ran back to the compound and at 3 p.m. sharp she was again at the gate to welcome me. My parents told me that she became restless when the bus arrived late by some minutes and watched anxiously at the direction from which the bus would speed in. On sighting it at the far end of the road, she leaped into the air to express her joy! My White aptly fitted into this description. “When you have a Lab you have a friend for life. The Lab's face even has an affectionate look; mine always looks like she is smiling. Labs are highly intelligent and obedient. The Lab rates high for affection, playfulness and is very social with humans.”(Top 10….) ….We, the 9th graders in the school, would go on a picnic-cum-study tour to the countryside, to a place of about 500 kilometers from our city St. Louis. Though we were all excited, the thought that I would be missing the company of White for such a long time, bothered me a lot. Previously, during weekend excursions, White was part of the family group and I do not recall missing her company even for a day, in these two years. Four days before my departure, my father bought a new car, telling me, ‘this car is your birthday gift.’ I took a few trial runs of the car in the compound of the house and White needed no permission to sit with me in the front seat. He seemed to welcome my ownership rights on this car-my birthday gift! They say, “Dogs use their tongues to explore the world. A dog’s tongue is as important (and useful) to him as our eyes and hands are to us: it’s a multi-purpose utility tool, used to taste things, explore the presence of new people and animals, express submissiveness, and to let you know that he values your companionship and friendship.” (All about...) In those couple of test drives, White seemed to have got acquainted with the interiors of the car and she must have concluded that only her special individual –that’s me—could occupy the driver’s seat! …..When I returned from the study tour, as I neared the house, the first thing that I expected was about the welcome that would be in store for me by White…..instead, the grim face of my sister standing at the gate shocked me!"Where are Mom and Dad? And what about White? Have all of them gone for shopping?” “Mom and Dad are sitting in the drawing room!” she said grimly and she began to sob. ……I ran in the direction of the house like an ace sprinter, and landed in the drawing room, gasping. Mom and dad embraced me….Mom said weakly, “….and your White is resting forever!" I literally grabbed my sister by the collar and asked, “Tell me …tell me, what happened to White!”……Mom gave the details. “That day, we engaged a chauffeur to go shopping and we wished to take your new car. As soon as White saw the chauffeur at the wheels, she went wild and as he opened the door, she flung herself on him. We tried our best to calm her down and I tried to hold her firmly. As the driver was taking the car out of the garage, she managed to wriggle out of my grip and leaped towards the car and came under the wheels unnoticed by the chauffeur. She died instantly, with no chance of providing any medical attention to her!” Conclusion: The loss White is an unacceptable reality for me in life. I always recall how she did the ultimate commitment to me, by offering her life itself, for what she thought was incorrect- a stranger taking away the car of her dear master.
