Number: New Orleans after Hurricane There are eleven functional health patterns which were proposed by Marjorie Gordon (Sonoma, 2004). Health perception and health management is one of the patterns whereby the focus is on the individuals’ perceived levels of well-being, health maintenance practices and their level of health. Other habits harmful to the health of he individual including drug use and smoking are also evaluated. There is increased drug abuse in New Orleans where crank is one of the mostly abused drugs.
This health pattern is applied in New Orleans health care safety net as the city’s health care changed after the storm and many were left without access to health services. Many people in New Orleans experience post traumatic stress and need a lot of support and counseling to deal with this issue according to Rhoads, Pearman, and Rick (Nd). Nutrition and metabolism focus on food and fluid consumption patterns in relation to the metabolic needs according to Daniels and Daniels (2004). This involves evaluation of local nutrient supplies and their adequacy.
In New Orleans, new restaurants have been established as well as new and improved types of foods such as praline, red beans and rice. The Foods Policy Advisory Committee has been established by the City Council of New Orleans to study access to health food access and reduce disparities experienced in accessing healthy food. Other issues such as problems related to tissue integrity, gastrointestinal system, fluid balance and host defense are also identified through this pattern. Elimination is a pattern where data collection focuses on patterns of excretion (Sonoma, nd).
In New Orleans excretory problems including diarrhea and constipation were experienced due to disparities in food access after the hurricanes. Data collection is done annually by researchers in the health sector to establish changes in food consumption in New Orleans. Activity and exercise assessment focuses on daily living activities which require energy such as exercise and leisure activities which are common in New Orleans. For instance music performances such as jazz and heritage festivals are still practiced in New Orleans giving locals the opportunity to exercise through dance.
Many citizens also take time to jog, run or play games that contribute to their physical exercise. Values and belief focus on the values and beliefs of the individual and their guiding goals toward decision making. People in New Orleans have not been challenged by the situation and are still upholding their values and beliefs which keep them surviving. The New Orleans city is an important place in terms of cultural identity as it (Gelinas, 2007). The city still upholds its musical traditions like the common liking for jazz music and blues which originated from the place (CSR 2005).
