Congress and Supreme Court decided that Bush should be the winner since he had more Electoral College votes than Gore. The essence of democracy is a government elected by the majority of the people. In other words, those who captured the majority of the public votes should be declared the winner; then only we can say that the election was fair under the norms of democratic principles.

If I had power, I would have changed the constitution to cancel the presidential election of Bush. In my opinion, the cancellation of Bush’s presidential election and the declaration of Al Gore as the winner would have changed American history in many ways. Bush is responsible for some of the most unfavorable incidents happening at present. It was because Bush decided to attack Iraq to take revenge upon Saddam for humiliating his father Bush Sr, the majority of the recent terrorist incidents occurred in this world. Bush’s decision to attack Iraq forced the Arab world and the Muslim world to think that America is against Islam. This belief forced them to justify the terrorist attacks as a means of self-defense. 9/11 was the outcome of the Iraq war.

Moreover, the recent economic recession severely affected America because of the enormous expenditure on the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan. It should be noted that Bush was again the villain who pushed Americans into the fight. According to Steve Rosenbaum (2009), “We must begin to refer to the current recession as the "Bush Recession". During the 8 years the Bush administration was in charge, we saw a dramatic expansion in available credit to borrowers who were not able to quality for conventional mortgages”( Rosenbaum).
For the last three years, Americans are suffering a lot of financial problems because of the recession and the subsequent destruction of some of the biggest companies and loss of employment. It should be noted that some Asian countries like India and China escaped from recession without many injuries whereas America is still struggling to escape from it. If Gore had won the presidential election in 2000, Bush would have never dared to contest in the 2004 election. America could have saved billions or trillions of dollars they wasted in Iraq and Afghanistan.

To conclude, I would have canceled Bush’s presidential election in 2000 to avoid the current recession, the 9/11 incident, and the war on terror. Read More
