Tabtip Louhabanjong Dr.Mambo Art History 101 Section: 002 Critique Paper II Graduate Juried Exhibition Graduate Juried Exhibition was a collection of unique and individual artworks created by graduate students. Each artist used a variety of mediums and themes in order to convey messages to the audience. The details and skills put into all of the artwork were exemplary and very expressive. Four styles, wood furniture, colorful abstract, porcelain sculpture, and mixed media really stood out and captured the essence of beauty, expressiveness, and art.

Wave Stand was a beautifully crafted pine oak furniture by Adam Robinson Cruscuolo. The smooth and delicate curves reminded one of an ocean wave filled with serenity, calm, and fluidity of motion. The piece represented movement, strength, and function. Also, the wavelike curves of the stand portrayed a sense of enduring force. For example, a wave is beautiful and magnificent to behold but it also fills its viewer with a feeling of awe and power. Therefore, not only could the Wave Stand be used as a graceful and decorative piece but also as a functional object able to endure and withstand time.

Behold the Trismegistus was a bold and vivid display of colorful abstract created by Michael Romagano. A variety of different mediums were used like, clay paint, acrylic, oil and ink. The use of both cool and warm tones were expertly blended together to produce a wonderful piece of unique and abstract art. The blending and repetition of colors gave the piece a magical rhythm and movement. The combination of various colors, texture and mediums symbolized the union of different religions, gods and messages.

Oil Swan was a beautiful porcelain sculpture created by Beth Porter which not only displayed stunning beauty but also radiated a sad message of our environment. The use of glaze and silver platter strongly appealed to the eyes. Both the posture and the color of the swan exemplified a strong message to the audience. For example, the leaning neck and the bent head over the body of the swan signified feelings of sadness, lost hope and lasting sorrow. It personified the damage humans have done to the environment.

Even though nature graciously provides us with everything we need, humans have begun to abuse and use up nature’s gifts at an unimaginable rate. The environment still stands for us in order to give, but it is now burdened and wounded with loss, greed, and wreckage. The black color of the swan represented the pollution and filth humans have filled the environment with. Nature was once pure, white and untainted; now it stands hopeless in a sea of darkness. Beth very artistically and skillfully portrayed this strong message for us to wake up and see how we have treated the very environment that allows us to live and enjoy life.

Essential Nature of the Collective was a very impressive mixed media artwork produced by Erica Kempler. This kinetic piece was created by using many small and mobile pieces like, light bulbs, buttons, needle pins, plastic flowers, seas shells and leaves. These were glued together to shape them into shells which were then attractively hung down from the ceiling at varying lengths. The different heights and the material used gave the viewer a sense of movement and motion. The piece wasn’t static at all and instead signified creation and change.

By using everyday common objects, Erica revealed how each and every piece is unique and special in order to give rise to a beautiful, functioning form of art. Similarly, every thing in nature has its essential role and by preserving and taking care of all of them, we can ensure a healthy and functioning environment.
