Understanding the mechanics of free speech as well as how it affects the freedom of a community then remains necessary to maintaining free thought in a culture.
The concept of free speech is one which is initiated as it protects the right of human beings to have a sense of freedom. When one is able to express themselves through communication, thoughts, and opinions, it becomes freedom. This is furthered by the ability to protect communication and the rights of individuals to expression. The meaning of free speech isn’t one which is based on the opinions or ideals of an individual. Instead, it is the freedom of communication and expression which remains important. If this is regulated or taken away, then it creates a lack of freedom of expression and impacts the level of freedom which one has. If the freedom of speech is taken away, it ultimately leads away from having a free society in one of the most important forms of expression and communication (Sedler, 377).
The concept of living in a free society through the use of expression and communication is furthered by the ideal of using communication as a way for an individual to protect other rights. If one is able to make a statement about what is wrong in a given situation, then this becomes a protection toward a given situation or circumstance. If this sense of freedom is taken away, then it can lead to a lack of justice or freedom in a situation where something wrong is done. There are several times when defamation and exploitation have questioned the right to speech. However, many have found that without this freedom, there would be the inability to discern and recognize justice and there wouldn’t be the freedom to decide between right and wrong in a given situation (Weaver, 17).
Examinations of justice as well as the right to communicate further with a free society by allowing for complete expression in any given situation. This helps with the development of multiculturalism, human rights for all, and the ability to overcome specific situations in society. As speech is used in a given situation, it is able to provide insight and perspective over a situation while allowing an individual to participate as a citizen. If free speech is taken away, then there is a sense of inequality that is also placed in society. The lack of speech leads to inequality of rights and ultimately defines a society that is led by the few elites who have the right to expression.
The concept of living in a free society is one which is dependent on several needs of the community. To truly live in a free society, there is the need to have free speech first. Without the ability to communicate, one can’t express their personal perspectives or relationships. This is furthered by problems that don’t allow one to have a sense of justice in a given situation. Further, there is the inability to show a sense of freedom and expression according to one’s diverse beliefs, thoughts, or cultures. This leads to a lack of overall freedom because of the inability to communicate and to have free speech.
