Revolt of the cheeseheads On February 28, the online publication of the New York Time’s “Economix” column hosted a controversial article by Nancy Folbre entitled “Revolt of the cheeseheads”. First up, the article does not speak about cheese. Instead the article describes a rebellious uproar from protestors in Wisconsin about the proposal that would make a crash on public sector unions by Governor Scott Walker in an effort comply with new budgetary changes. These protestors were awarded pizzas while camping out in the capitol by supporters hence the name “cheeseheads” The particular crash on public sector unions would be caused by tax breaks for the rich, reduction in public sector wages and privatization of public sector enterprises.
The author also expressed thoughts that this new proposal if successful would affect mostly female dominated sectors as fire fighters and police officers, which are mostly male dominated, would be exempted from this rule. The author described a previous visit to the area as being one filled with resentment from protestors and signs expressing their distress. Protestors demonstrated for a policy that would be fair and involve equal sacrifice in which the writer drew reference to democrat of Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton’s proposal which had more favorable intentions.
It is evident that the drive to implement this proposal is being fuelled by two of the most influential people in the business community. The Koch brothers are obviously using Governor Walker as leverage for their own benefits, which would be extensive.
