They contribute in one way or another to the character’s participation in criminal activities. The life in the cities is clearly portrayed to the readers who develop clear and authentic information on the experiences of the delinquent in the city life. The thirteen chapter gives a history of the adventures of Stanley in the city, as well as a detailed story on the character’s social and cultural background and the story of his childhood. Throughout the book, the journey of Stanley through various stages of his life is clearly depicted.
The story concludes with a sad ending when Stanley passes on and has nothing important to exhibit as having accomplished in his life. In short, Shaw and Becker (1996) attempt to display their interest on the increase of delinquent behaviors in the society through the life history of a delinquent boy, Stanley. Favorite character My favorite character is Stanley who is portrayed as having a talent in his career of delinquency. The presentation by Shaw and Becker (1996) draw my attention towards an assessment and follow-up of what the character may be up to in his next move.
Stanley moves from a positive minded being to a person that is driven by forces that are much more complicated than a normal person in the society. It is this feature that lead to my need to follow the personality from the onset of the book to the last stages of the work. I am left to wonder why Stanley has resulted into a product of the society that is driven by cultural values and attributes. It is unfortunate that the character is discovered at a tender age and is subjected to activities that do not seem to contribute anything positive to his life.
He takes part in jack-rolling crime; a factor that marks the beginning of his troubles. With the death of his mother and remarriage of his father, Stanley sees no hope in life, considering the numbers of siblings in his family. The series of misfortunes take shape upon his arrest for a number of charges, as well as firing from his job as a taxi driver for lying about his past criminal confirmations. Until his death in 1982, Stanley's life is completely a result of fate in the society. Despite all the help given to this character in an attempt to solve his problems, the situation gets worse.
This character, indeed, pulls the readers to his side due to the series of misfortunes he undergoes with no hope of getting better. General notion of the book An analysis of the work by Shaw and Becker (1996) reveals that the commencement and closing stages of the book are not clearly depicted. The main aspect missing in this work is the part that includes biography, being mandatory in such a piece of work. However, the book has put in much effort to reduce the escalating number of delinquent cases in the society by portraying Stanley’s life as full of misfortunes.
Shaw and Becker (1996) endeavored to support the sociological aspect of the society which may be interpreted as an important facet in the creation of a better society. The book teaches all social laborers on the importance of scrutinizing the attributes of their staff prior to their confidence bestowed on them. On the part of the ordinary citizens, Shaw and Becker (
