Chaos theory refers to the area of study involved in the study of the butterfly-effect nature of dynamic systems. The theory is not only used in mathematics, but also in other areas such as nursing, medicine, biology, physics, meteorology, engineering, philosophy, and sociology. These dynamical systems have a behavior that is so sensitive to the initial conditions that can be used in determining the future (Gleick, 2011).  The theory can be studied by analytical techniques of recurrence plots and chaotic mathematical models.

As already hinted, chaos theory can be applied in the field of nursing because it has a lot of contributions to make towards its prosperity. With the increasing complexities of the nursing profession, chaos has persisted. These have been experienced in the management of personnel, time, and other resources available in the health care facilities. For this reason, nursing leaders should be ready to apply the principles of chaos theory in planning, research, time management, planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and forecasting service delivery. This can be a major step towards the improvement of the quality of service delivery in the nursing sector.

Leadership Strategies

Actually, nursing, as a profession, has lots of chaos. As a complex discipline, it brings together different players with diverse cultural, economic, social, religious, geographical, and educational backgrounds, thus making it a recipe for chaos. However, in my opinion, I hold the view that research is the major area in the nursing profession that is prone to chaos (Kiel & Euel, 2007). Although it plays a significant role in disseminating information, research has not been fully exploited. Meaning, a lot still needs to be done.

In order to handle such chaos, the nursing leader should come up and apply the most appropriate strategies. First, the leader should be ready to be flexible and accept to empower others to conduct researches in their areas of interest. This should be done by offering financial support to the nurses who are interested in conducting researches. Besides, the leader should encourage team play and collaboration within the healthcare providing facility (Kiel & Euel, 2007). This will help in promoting the sharing of ideas between different nurses who might be holding different opinions. Lastly, the leader should adopt the strategy of inspiration. As a leader, he should be at the forefront of conducting researches to enable him to act as a role model for other nurses who might be interested in conducting researches to eliminate chaos and improve the sector.

Conclusion

The first lesson I learned is that chaos theory is very much applicable in the field of nursing. Besides, I have learned that it is a necessary component of nursing which has now become a complex and chaotic profession. Lastly, I learned that a nursing leader should use the theory to carry out business planning, nursing research, objective time management, healthcare strategy, and evaluation of service delivery. This means that chaos theory needs to be effectively applied in nursing leadership because it has got important contributions to make towards the satisfaction of management, nurses, patients, and the general public.
