With adequate and relevant information about psychosis, patients can get proper treatment and fit better in society. This literature review seeks to provide insight into available research information on psychotic disorders and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in first-episode psychosis (FEP), by analyzing selected articles.

To arrive at a considerable number of articles to be used in the literature review, a wide range of articles was sought out from different sources. Generally, the search strategy involved looking for all articles that contain information related to psychosis, then narrowing down to precise articles that contain information on psychosis causes, courses, treatment, and coping strategies.

The search strategy was dependent on search terms as the major defining elements of the search strategy. The search terms used included; psychosis, first episode psychosis, early psychosis, therapies in psychosis, cognitive behavioral therapy, adaptation mechanisms in psychosis, coping strategies in psychosis, and preventive mechanisms in psychosis. The search excluded articles that documented psychosis as a secondary disorder due to their sparse information and articles that provided no information on the treatment of psychosis.

Due to the extensive nature of information available on psychosis disorder, the search narrowed down to sources of literature that specifically dealt with medical issues. The search thus utilized the Cochrane database of systematic reviews and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). The two databases are crucial in providing important articles on psychosis, due to their specialization in medical issues. In the analysis and critical appraisal of chosen articles, the PICO model was applied.

The framework, which encompasses four focus elements including population, intervention, comparison, and outcome, in combination with the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) tools for randomized control trials, was deemed comprehensive for the analysis since these are the principal research aspects in any scientific study. With broad literature on psychosis, there are various definitions for it.
