13th April Reflective essay As a nurse, we studied various units that included practical and theory lessons. The university aims at producing all rounded professionals who have the ability to deal with various challenges that are experienced in the nursing profession, the instructors were more focused at evidence based practice as a way of improving the skills of the students. Through close intermingling with the patients, as student nurses we came up with a lot of information which made feel as if we were practicing in a real working environment. In order to ensure that as student nurses we were prepared to tackle any kind of challenge that we may face in our daily duties, the instructors exposed us to various experiences. Apart from the real life experiences and the extensive research that our instructors exposed us to, we had opportunities to work as replacements in neighboring health caring centers. This reflection paper discusses two major incidents that occurred during my training and how they impacted on my training. Major incidents that happened during my training Difficult patient One of the notable incidents that occurred in the course of my placement in a neighboring hospital was a meeting with a difficult patient who never wanted to provide information during one of my assignments (Thompson 31). As it was indicated by my instructor, it was my responsibility to deal with the patient and later make a report to the instructors. Having visited the hospital two days ago, the patient who at first was supportive at the initial stages changed his mind and started withholding vital information that could have helped me to give effective treatment based on the foods he consumes and other information that I needed. As the result of the failure by the patient to cooperate, I decided to use the communication skills I had learnt in the order to extract the information I needed. Precisely, I was persuasive and clear in my communication an aspect that made the difficult patient to be collaborative and provide the information (Morrison 57). Researching on various nursing topics and making of PowerPoint presentation Based on the need by the instructors that each of the student nurses be aware of the relationship that exist between nurses I was directed by my instructor to identify various types of nursing careers and their duties and make a report in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. Some of the notable types of nurses that I included in my slides included Clinical study nurse, Geriatric nurse, Intensive Care Nurse, Educator Nurse, Addictions Nurse, Nurse Midwife, Occupational health Nurse and Nurse practitioner (Newell 26). After the presentation, I gave my audience chances to ask any question or give their views on the topic. The instructor also gave his feedback on the way I researched the topic and on my presentation. Reflection on the two incidents Out of the practical case that involved the difficult patient, I gained skills in counseling and communication. As I privately communicated with the patient, I had a chance to practice my communication skills that I learnt as a student nurse. I gained a lot of skills of how as a student nurse I could retrieve more information from my subject by use of private counseling or communication once I join the nursing profession. This means that I have to mentor my patients so that we could mutually develop interpersonal relationship (Siviter 32). As a result, I benefited from creating strong relationship with my colleagues as well as my patient. It was the expectations of the patients that nurses should provide quality services to them and give them hope. As a student nurse who was dedicated to achieve his goals, the experience of the patient who held back vital information, I was able to identify on how to take responsibility of my own practice. I had to improve the situation in the field thus reducing patient complaints and carry my day to day duties as required thus sustaining the improvement. Due to interaction with my fellow students and the instructors during the PowerPoint presentation I was able to improve my communication skills (Timmins 56). This was based on the fact that prior to the presentation I was involved in some practices that ensured that I was courageous, clear and avoid being nervous or stammering. In my efforts to answer questions from other student nurses and instructors, I had to communicate in a manner that each of them would understand what I was saying, thus my communication skills were highly improved (Mullen 45). The feedback from the instructor and my fellow students on my presentation was a great experience that taught me the usefulness of discussion and involving others in my responsibilities (Sapir 15). Things that did not turn as I expected Lack of adequate encouragement During the two years training, I was not getting enough encouragement to pursue the course especially from my friends who were undertaking other courses. However, based on my determination to pursue nursing and contribute to the health of the community, I was motivated to take all the units in the course thus becoming competent in my future duties (Trinder 46). Action plan Issue or challenge Lack of proper communication and inadequate skills on making representation and reports are major issue that student nurse are faced with. Additionally, some nurses do not value the importance of feedback from their colleagues or instructors. There is lack of adequate communication between students in the same institution regardless of the courses they are undertaken. Despite the importance of nursing profession in creating health communities, some students do not provide adequate support to the students undertaking the nursing courses. The need to address the issue To address the issues, I had to seek the assistance of my colleagues as well as from my instructor. As a student nurse, I value feedback from my instructors as well as working as a team. To address the issue of presentation, I need to do more practice in making power point presentation as well as online research. In my future endeavors, I will initiate a program where students in the same institutions of higher education will share a platform and appreciate the courses being undertaken by their colleagues since all of them are imperative in the economical, social and political development of any country. Resources required One of the resources that I needed to address the issue was research centers and my fellow student who were through with their nurse training. Likewise, I consulted with the instructors in order to get additional information. Institutions of higher and especially the one dealing with nursing career or community health should provide sustainable support to students who are focused at attaining their goals. Outcome The final result was to that as a student nurse, I gained wide experience through external training and seminars as well as lecturers that I attended. Through working with other nurses, I was trained on how to deal with various challenges that are faced by nurses. Works Cited Morrison, P.
