Throughout my life, I have come to believe that individuals are suited for specific career and life pursuits. While I didn’t always know I wanted to be a nurse, from a young age I knew that my career path would be in helping others. Throughout my adolescence, my grandmother oftentimes would say to me, “you have healing hands, and one day you are going to grow up and take care of people.” Throughout my secondary education, I explored a number of academic pursuits but always found my greatest aptitude in those that human care. After high school, I married, spent a period living in Japan, and raised two children. Still, I always felt a strong sense of social obligation towards helping others. It was with this motivation that I enrolled and graduated from the University of District of Columbia. I would later enter a University of South Carolina program where I studied cardiac nursing. Today I am an accomplished Registered Nurse with an extensive background in Coronary Clinical Research Nursing and Catheterization Lab/EP Lab.

While I have had a rewarding personal and professional life, throughout my career I have always sought new challenges. It was this search for the next step in my career that brought me to health care informatics. I understand that informatics is the future of nursing and that nurses will play an important part in changing healthcare for patients in the future. One of my primary career aspirations is to operate at the crux of these innovations in nursing practice. My goal is to achieve a master's degree in nursing. With a master's degree in nursing, I can become a Clinical Nurse Specialist that specializes in patients with cardiovascular disease. I plan to enroll at Chamberlain College of Nursing in October 2011. I have consulted with an admission advisor of the MSN program and developed a plan to help me achieve my goal. My plans are to achieve this degree by 2013.

Although I am strongly centered on achieving my master's degree in nursing and becoming a Clinical Nurse Specialist, I also recognize that I have a number of larger-scale goals and aspirations. I have learned as a nursing leader it is important to advocate for my patients and staff members. My personal perspective on leadership is that it is successful when it occurs at the intersections of academic knowledge, experience, and personal responsibility. Through achieving further success in the nursing profession, I recognize that I will be able to strengthen my leadership ability as a means of making a contribution not only to my family’s well being but also to the larger community. As I reflect on my life, while I have experienced setbacks, I have also achieved most of the personal and professional goals I set for myself. Throughout this period my goals have increasingly shifted away from self-interest to larger-scale concerns. Ultimately, my life meaning and aspirations are in advancing these concerns for myself, my family, and the continued prosperity of the community in which I live.
