Question 1

The healthcare provider organization being discussed here is a large medical research center of more than 600 beds, with both acute and ambulatory care delivery services. It is also a medical center whereby academic research on medical issues is undertaken (Motion Computing 2007).

Question 2

Use of Motion C5 brought about drastic improvements in the way vital signs data were acquired using the traditional mode of COWs- nurse’s paper brains and entering it into EMR later. From a benefit point of view, the traditional system disclosed a mean delay of 123 minutes while with the use of Motion C5; this data latency was reduced to a jaw-hopping less than 1 minute, signifying a reduction of almost 99%. This improvement led to data receiving physicians earlier and decision making getting faster. It also enabled physicians to capture signs of any problems arising in their early stages.

From a cost point of view also, Motion C5 proved to be of a less expensive venture than EMR and COWs. From acquisition cost to maintenance and repairing, Motion C5 was found to be $562,500 less expensive than the installation of COWs across 3 years of useful life.

Question 3

In addition to Motion Computing, GE Healthcare and Intel Corporation were the two other vendors involved in the development of the mobile solution. In the case of Mt. Auburn, it was a single-sourced relationship where Mt. Auburn had already used MEDITECH’s products. However, in the present case, vendor relationship is collaborative where vendors are pilot studying their new product and UCSF is benefitting from the newly developed features of that product.

Question 4

The roll-out plan for the new Motion C5 device for charted and implemented well. The objectives and deadlines were set in advance which was more or less accomplished. For example, the study results did present marked improvement in workflows, reduced transcription errors, data latency, and improved patient satisfaction. However, the concern of sharing the data across units, departments, nurses and physicians do not show clear evidence of success because the study involved user assigned mobile devices and not shared ones. Thus this aspect of the pilot remains unclear and unsolved.

Question 5

The Motion C5 device is advertised for having a wide variety of uses ranging from practice management, EMRs, CPOE, clinical documentation, electronic medication administration record and mobile image consulting facility. The rugged feature of this device makes it resistant against dust, smoke, and other infectious elements.

To provide for its cleansing, its internal frame is alloyed with magnesium. Sealed design protects from dust and moisture, chemical resistant resin makes it easier to clean and rubber elastomer provides for bump safety (Motion Computing 2011).
