Discussion of Decision Making Model Uustal formulated a model that is useful in making effective ethical decisions. The model ensures the transformation of ethical dilemma into a morally appropriate solution (David, 2001). I usually encounter ethical dilemmas in the clinical environment. One such dilemma is initiation of abortion. A doctor requested me to help in abortion. I declined the request because I strongly oppose abortion. I subscribe to a religion that believes that human life starts at conception.
The religious teachings hence strongly oppose abortion. The decision making model strongly assists in addressing ethical dilemmas when faced with socially controversial practices like clinical abortion. The model has nine steps. Firstly, the model identifies the objective. The clinical objective was to assist a patient abort. The second step entails surveying available options. The options considered are; terminating the pregnancy, and encouraging the patient to keep the baby. Step three involves analyzing complex health issues involving abortion.
Abortion is legally allowed when the life of the expectant woman is threatened. The patient did not have a serious health problem, and hence abortion is not the best option. The fourth step entails the significance of the health decision made. The decision of encouraging the patient to stop abortion demands is very important, because the life of the unborn child was ensured. Step five involves budgeting energy and time. The efforts were aimed at convincing both the doctor and the patient that abortion is not the best alternative.
Decision making strategy is adopted in step six. The strategy involves convincing both the patient that her health is not worsened by the pregnancy. Step seven shows the major option adopted. The doctor was tasked with the responsibility of testing the patient to ensure that her health can ensure full term pregnancy. Step eight communicates expert opinion. Test results shows that the patient can healthily carry the pregnancy. The last step involves making the right choice (Dennis, 2014). The patient was shown the test results that show she is capable of proceeding with the pregnancy.
She, ultimately, agreed to continue with the pregnancy and give birth to the baby. References Coon, Dennis. (2014). Introduction to psychology: exploration and application. St. Paul: West Pub.
