APN Leader Interview Project APN Leader Interview Project Introduction The primary purpose of the interview with an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) leader was to help highlight some of the key competencies needed for APN role development. I particularly chose to interview Miss Jocelyn Pearson, who is a Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) at Mayo Clinic Hospital with three years of experience in clinical practice. Nursing leaders often play a critical role in shaping the nursing profession as well as ensuring that it is responsive to the constantly changing healthcare system. According to NONPF (2011), the core competencies of APN leaders can be broadly categorized into scientific foundation, quality practice, leadership, practice inquiry, policy, literacy in technology and information, ethics, health delivery and independent practice. The technical changes in the health care domain have resulted into various shifting in the substantial portion of care. These shifts are normally from single handed health care systems to the home environments where patients and their care partners are responsible for care previously ordained by the nurses in their acute care settings. Competencies necessary for the advanced practice Nursing (APN) role development are adversely dependent on the nursing registration. Through an advanced registration of nurses, each and every individual nurse will be ethically stable and liable to any nursing practice consequences arising as a result of unreasonable competencies. Nursing field is a very noble field of professionalism hence it should be guided to the later by the codes of conducts regarding competencies necessarily required in this field of professionalism. This research paper explains the competencies necessary for Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) role development. NONPF NP Core Competencies An advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) is a post-graduate education nurse. APRN’s are well-enlightened with advanced clinical and didactic education, skills, knowledge and clinical nursing scope practices at large. APRN basically defines a nursing practice level that utilizes the expanded and extended nursing skills, knowledge and experience in planning, assessment, diagnosis, implementation and overall evaluation skills in the care required. Nurses practicing at this noble level are distinctively educationally prepared at the post-graduate level and may unconditionally work in either generalist or specialist capacity. Nonetheless, the basis of advanced practice is linked to higher knowledgeable extents (NONPF 2011). The APRN skills and experience must be ethically applied within the client or nurse-patient relationship in order to achieve an optimum outcome through evidence-based critical analysis and problem solving in the nursing field of professionalism. The Interview with the APN As earlier been noted, the interviewee, Miss Jocelyn Pearson is currently serving as a Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) at Mayo Clinic Hospital. She has three years of experience in clinical practice and is primarily operating in three focus areas namely nursing practice, patient care and organization/systems. Although securing a chance to interview the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) was not easy due to her extremely busy schedule, I finally managed to successfully secure an appointment after making several attempts. Generally, the interview was fairly successful. One of the major areas of focus included discussing Miss Pearson’s personal insights regarding the various APN core competencies. In addition, the interview also dwelt on the perspectives of the APN leader regarding the evolving roles of nursing leaders as well as the challenges currently faced by APN practitioners in the contemporary healthcare system as their strive to meet the goals and objectives of their respective organizations. Analysis of the discussed APN competencies There are a number of APN core competencies that were discussed during the interview. First and foremost, the core competencies of APN highlighted by the Advanced Practice Nursing leader included direct clinical practice, provision of expert advice and coaching, consultation, clinical research, professional leadership, ethical decision making as well as collaboration. The interviewee particularly based her observations on her experience and current occupation as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) at Mayo Clinic Hospital where some of her roles included working collaboratively with others to enhance the quality of patient care, carrying out direct clinical practice as well as providing leadership and decision making roles in the organization. With the untimely growth in Advanced Practice Roles such as Nurse Practitioners titles and Clinical Nurse Specialist there have emerged various interests and recognitions in the in the consequential benefits that APNs may accrue and bring to the care of patients. The assertions of the interviewee have particularly been confirmed by numerous studies have ultimately shown the importance of using and advanced practice in the clinical domain as it yields significant contributions. APNs for example are effective in the improvement of the clinical practice’s outcomes such as readmissions, care costs, health status as well as patients satisfaction (NONPF 2011). APNs support the liberty and equality of nurses and Physicians in the clinical field of professionalism. In the APNs provisions, both the nurses and physicians have an equal or slightly above average to the physicians’ clinical outcomes in the primary care setting. APNs competencies stabilizes the clinical nurses’ specialists’ timely interventions as opposed which is ethically commendable in as far as inpatients and daily attendance nursing teams are concerned. Describe the NONPF Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies In the month of august 2008, NONPF certified the subsequent evolution of the Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) as one of the majorly authorized nurse practitioner (NP) practice. Through this provision, a more knowledgably skilled nurses professionally were passed out. The Nurse practitioner education as an entity of NONPF competencies postulates in its recognitions that the young nurses ability to show successful achievements of the NONPF competencies for the NP educational systems is of an importantly greater value than the number of medical hours the students have performed. The Nurse Practitioners Core Competencies are therefore Ove reliant on and integrated Master’s and DNP core competencies which are the core guidelines for the educational programs preparing the NPs to the implementation of a fully operational scope of practice as a licensed and independent clinical practitioners. Nurse practitioner graduates basically have to be competent (NONPF 2011). Herein competency implies the ability of an individual nurse to attend to a patient without any difficulties. These practitioners henceforth have the skills, knowledge and the abilities specifically needed in the independence clinical practices. The NONPF core care competencies are achieved through a well-monitored patient care experiences with a skeptical emphasis on the interpersonal and independent practices; patient centered care across nursing field, advanced knowledge of the health care delivery system and the acquaintance professionally and in experience the analytic skills for the provision of evidence based clinical diagnosis processes. Nurse practitioner core competencies and leadership competences of NONPF The NONPF dwell on the nurse practitioners core competencies and the leadership competencies. The scientific foundation of nursing practitioner competencies ensures the individually independently partitioning nurses can critically analyses data and evidence in order to improve the advanced nursing practice. NONPF also translates research guidelines and other knowledge competencies in order to improve the practice processes and overall outcomes. The nursing practitioner’s competencies also ensure that clinical knowledge is fully integrated from the sciences and humanities within the context of nursing science. Lastly, the scientific foundation of nursing competencies solely aims at developing new practices and approaches based on the integration of theory, research and practical clinical knowledge (NONPF 2011). Leadership competencies as per the NONPF nursing guidelines assumes a complex and advanced leadership roles in the clinical practice field and guide various changes. Leadership competencies ideologically advocates for an improvement of access, quality as well as cost-effective health care provision. This systematic scheme also demonstrates that in the clinical practices, leadership must be entirely based on critical empirical and reflective thinking. This leadership competency also advocates for a leadership system in which a multiple stakeholders’ collaboration is entirely fostered for example, patients, policy makers, integrated health care system and communities in order to improve the health care.
