Learning Activity Appraisal of the Findings of a Qualitative Study: Noone, J., Allen, T. L., Sullivan, M., McKenzie, G., Esqueda, T., & Ibarra, N. (2014). Escuchando a Nuestros Jovenes: A Latino Youth Photovoice Project on Teen Pregnancy. Hispanic Health Care International, 12(2), 63-70. doi: .org/10.1891/1540-4153.12.2.63.This study was done to discover the weaknesses as well as the strengths of the communities living in Pacific Northwest concerning early teenager pregnancy. Photographs of risk accelerating as well as preventive measures were taken and various themes selected, researched on and presented to community.1. Synopsis appraisalThe study addresses the disparities contributed by lack of acces to information and services.

Nevertheless, it informs the community of the implementation and and development strategies that will improve the reproductive health of the Latina people.Services and support is provided to the families through partnership (Watkins, 2010).2. Appraisal critiqueHowever, the study does not fully explicate the influence of the difference in acculturation and norms pertaining culture and sex. Furthermore, the study is narrowed down to many communities in avery small geographical region (Scherer, 2010).3. What experience, situation, or subculture did the researchers seek to understand?

The researcher was seeking to understand why teen pregnancy situation is more rampant in some races. This is true because the researcher conducted the study on Latin, African American and non-Hispanic teens.4. Did the researchers want to produce a description of an experience, a social process, or an event, OR is the goal to generate a theory? The researcher wants to engage the community in social process of dealing with the issues that are related to the teen pregnancy. This aids in developing and implementing strategies that improve the reproductive health. 5. How was data collected?

The photographs and the field notes that were taken during the photovoice sessions are the major methods of data collection. The journal and the cameras that were given to the youth were used to make notes and to take photographs respectively.6. How did the researchers control their biases and preconceptions?During data collection process, instructions were given to the youths not to include the subjects faces when aking photographs for confidentiality reasons. 7. Are specific pieces of data (e.g., direct quotes) and more generalized statements (themes, theories) included in the research report?

Various themes were included in the research report. Some aids in reducing the teen pregnancy like theme of proper communication, education and allocation of community resources while some increased the risks like alcohol abuse.8. What were the main findings of the study?During the thir session, five themes ere established from the photos that were selected. The themes are Latino values, pressure, community resources, risk for teens and education. The risks facing the youths are many and broad.

Media and peer pressure accelerated the probability of teen pregnancy. Education is important because it provides career opportunities. Community resources such as libraries, sports and churches keep the youth busy. Families can also benefit from health clinics (Scherer, 2010).ConclusionThe study findings are valid because one of the main cause of teen pregnancy is the family related isues and cultural values. If the study is carried out in adiferent ethnic group with same culture, then the same results would be expected.

However the results would be different with other parts of the world with better valus, resources and education (Watkins, 2010).References listScherer, L. (2010). Teen pregnancy (1st ed.).
