COMMUNITY MEMBERS Poor people in Philadelphia are selected as the targeted population for the proposed study. Information from archival data and research available indicates that the whole of Philadelphia is prone with a number of health needs, and these needs worsen among the poor communities within the territory (Calfee and Scheraga, 2012). It is for the abundance of such health needs that demand urgent attention and interventions that the poor people in Philadelphia have been selected as the most preferred population for the health promotional proposal.

Archival data and research findings made available by Healthy People 2010 and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2012) indicates that “Philadelphia residents have higher rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, uninsurance, obesity, and tobacco use in comparison to the Southeastern Pennsylvania region as a whole.” Interestingly, most of these problems that are faced by the people within the population are caused by environmental factors including population emanating from the poor use of vacant lands (Bushman, 2007).

Table 1: Health indicator comparisons between US and Philadelphia populationsSource: Visual EPI As far as health indicators are concerned, the leading health indicator in greatest need of application within the population would be said to be obesity among young men and women in Philadelphia as the city is fast becoming known as "Fattest American City" by Mens Fitness Magazine (2005). A corresponding health promotion initiative to address the issue would thus be one that centers on the eating habit of residents as majority of these residents are known to be involved in poor eating habits that put their health at risk (Calfee and Scheraga, 2012).
