Barriers of Research Utilization from the Perspective of Nurses in Eastern Turkey Synopsis What was the purpose of the study? The study was commissioned to determine the perception of nurses as it pertained to the impediments of research and their views on research utilization. In addition, Tan, Akgun and Kardas (2012) assert that the study aimed at determining the number of nurses who attended scientific seminars, as well as those who adopt the studies published in scientific journals. Who participated or contributed data?

The above studies confirmed that few nurses participate in scientific research activities or are aware of current trends in the field, as identified in professional nursing journals. For example, Tan, Akgun and Kardas (2012) report that studies in Australia showed that 70% of registered nurses participated in scientific activities while 85% of the nurses rarely read professional journals on nursing. The United Kingdom also registered similar statistics in regards to the participation of nurses in research.

In Turkey, the percentage of nurses who participated in a research process was a paltry 11.3%; the percentage of those who did not participate was 70% while 90.8% did not subscribe to any periodicals on nursing research. What methods were used to collect data? The method for data collection employed in this study was both anonymous and voluntary multiple-inquiry, demographic questionnaires and a Barriers Scale distributed to 1,559 nurses. Was an intervention tested? No intervention was tested.

What were the main findings? The study had key findings which include: a. Nurses rarely use research results as required, if at all. b. Nurses in Turkey had little or no access to information on evidence-based practice as a method of problem solving in clinical setups. c. Few nurses in Turkey (11.3%) participate in scientific research activities or are aware of the current trends in the nursing research field and a further 90.8% do not subscribe to any periodical on nursing research. d.

Nurses in Australia and the UK are highly involved in scientific nursing research activities where 70% participated in scientific activities, but a massive 85% rarely read nursing professional journals. e. Insufficient time is an impediment in the implementation of new ideas and reading of research materials. Credibility Is the study published in a source that required peer review? Yes X No ___ Not sure ___ This study was published by Elsevier, and when accessing reliable databases, this research can be found in the peer reviewed journals section.

Was the design used appropriate to the research questions? Yes X No ___ Not sure ___ The study adopted a descriptive, quantitative research design because the aspects being investigated are not to be changed in any way. Did the data obtained and the analyses conducted answer the research questions? Yes X No ___ Some but not others ___ The data obtained and analyses conducted is relevant to the research questions as they show that some of the critical impediments to nursing research include minimal participation of nurses in research, as well as failure to keep current with professional publications.

Was there anything about the way the participants were chosen or their characteristics that could have influenced the findings? Yes ___ No X There were no characteristics for any chosen participant; they were obtained through random selection. Were the measuring instruments valid and reliable? Yes X No ___ This study utilized a questionnaire and the measurement of its validity and reliability is what determines the quality of the measurement instrument. The questionnaire’s reliability in data collection was consistent and this was evident throughout the findings.

In addition, data interpretation was simplified due to the manner in which the data was presented on the questionnaire. Were important extraneous variables and bias controlled? Yes X No ___ The research took into account: age, educational background, nursing experience, work setting, work assignment, participation in research, and engagement in scientific activities from random selection of participants from different hospitals. By randomly selecting participants, researchers were able to significantly reduce bias in their overall results.

One variable that played an important role is time. It was also observed that the failure of nurses to participate in conferences and subscription to professional journals was due to their inability to alter patient care schedules. This argument does not hold since all professionals can participate in additional activities as long as they are willing to do so. Yes X No ___ Can’t be sure ___ These findings have been heavily supported by previous studies in the UK and US, where nurses identified insufficient time as an impediment in the implementation of new ideas and reading of research materials. For each main finding is it credible? Yes X No ___ Yes, I consider all the main findings to be credible Conclusion In conclusion, I agree with the finding of this study.

The barriers to research in nursing practice can be overcome by proper utilization of research findings and studies. Nurses propose that there is a need to provide adequate time for research, provision of financial and institutional support. To achieve this, nurses assert that there should be an increase in administrative support for research, as well as an increase in financial support for research projects and researchers. Nurses also need to be informed about recent scientific developments and clinical implementations through on-the-job training as well as through research courses that are provided before graduating as a nurse.
