Delegation

Reporting: I noted how nurses are always faced with various tasks as soon as the shift is started.

Responding: I felt overwhelmed by multiple tasks and I felt like I am placing patients at an even greater risk

What’s involved: I felt that it is important to assign other tasks to other nurses who can competently carry out the job.

Relating: I personally felt that assigning other tasks to the right individuals can enhance patient care

What’s involved: I, therefore, saw a need to develop skills in delegation in order to make an effective transition into practice.

Reasoning: I believe that by learning to delegate, I can easily make a transition into clinical practice, making the transition less traumatic.

What’s involved: Delegation involves a process of assigning tasks to the proper individuals, knowing their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their general abilities.

Reconstructing: I must learn to delegate and be effective in the process.  In order to do this, I need to learn how to divide tasks before I finally make the transition into practice. 

What’s involved: I understand now that delegation involves a complicated process of reviewing tasks and responsibilities and managing these based on appropriate qualifications in order to prevent medical errors and promote improved patient outcomes.

Responding: I felt it important for me to build rapport with the client in order for me to be an effective nurse

What’s involved: I felt that it is important for me to learn how to be effective in my relationship with the client, in terms of bonding with them but still maintaining an effective distance from them.

Relating: I personally felt that building a therapeutic relationship with patients can ensure the easier transition into clinical practice, and in the end enhance patient care

What’s involved: I, therefore, saw a need to learn skills in building therapeutic relationships.

Reasoning: I believe that by learning therapeutic relationship skills, I can easily make a transition into clinical practice, making the transition less tedious for me and for the patient.  

What’s involved: Building a therapeutic relationship involves a lengthy and slow process that needs to be eased into gradually. 

Reconstructing: I must learn how to establish therapeutic skills and how to be effective in the process.  In order to do this, I need to learn how to develop rapport with patients, listen to them, and empathize with them

What’s involved: I understand now that building therapeutic relations can be a long process and that I need to put my heart into the process in order to gain the best results.

Leadership

Reporting: I noted how nurses have to be assertive leaders and managers in the clinical setting

What’s involved: I noted that a nurse cannot effectively carry out her task without possessing leadership abilities and skills

Responding: I felt it important for me to step up and be a leader and to learn the qualities of effective leadership. 

What’s involved: I felt that it is important for me to transform myself from a member into a leader and to reach a higher level in the application of my skills.

Relating: I personally felt that developing leadership skills can make me a valuable member of the healthcare team

What’s involved: I, therefore, saw a need to develop leadership skills, especially in terms of assertiveness, delegation, and time management

Reasoning: I believe that by learning leadership skills, I can easily make a transition into clinical practice, making the transition less stressful for me.    

What’s involved: Strong and effective leadership involves a dynamic process for the nurse; it requires various qualities which need to be mastered. 

Reconstructing: I must learn how to be a leader and how to be an effective leader.  In order to do this, I need to learn how to be more assertive, to be firm, and to be decisive.

What’s involved: I understand now that being a leader requires a lot of confidence and strength of character.
