This is a literature review on drug addiction in Davao Philippines and the importance of psychological educational rehab centers for the youth. Drug addiction in Davao City Davao City is renowned for its ability to control illegal use of drugs. The city Mayor Sara Z. Duterte is very strict about implementing her policy on the total elimination of illegal drug use within the City premises. In fact, she urged City Hall workers who are into illegal use of drugs to quit their jobs (Paloma, 2011). This is how serious the City Mayor in her quest to control and eliminate social problems that are associated with drug addiction. Regarding this, the Mayor also placed strong importance on eradicating illegal use of prohibited drugs among the youth. Thus, the very presence of rehab center for the youth in the city would remarkably prove this important claim. Drug addiction in Davao City is a major concern as well as its total elimination or if not alleviation. This is due to strong political power that the City government substantially possessed over its people. The people remarkably supported the City Mayor’s vision on eradicating drug addiction in the city to make it free from crimes. In fact, Barangays are active in their participation on the lecture about the ill-effects of misusing drugs (City Government of Davao, 2012). In other words, the entire Davao City is in perfect harmony and unity with the goal of the government to build a City that is free from ill effects of drug addiction. Thus, it has just become a norm in the City to hear somebody shoot to dead especially when the victim would be a law breaker or offender and drug user. It in this reason that different institutions in the country have remarkable opinion the prevailing justice system in the country if indeed it is able to adjust the justice needs of the rural poor (Franco, 2008). This is due to the fact that those primarily victims in the shoot out are poor young individuals but with remarkable inclusion in drug addiction and other related crimes. However, the City government does not want to end up every law breaker being shot to dead at the street especially the youngsters. Thus, rehab center for the youth is present in Davao City having the government’s active and full moral support. Rehabilitation centers for youth Young people who are confined in rehab centers in Davao City are those with significant backgrounds in committing crimes and other law-breaking activities including but not limited to juvenile and statutory rape, robbery, riots, murder and drug abuse. Within this rehabilitation center young people are provided with care primarily on psychological concerns and educational activities and needs. In the Philippines, particularly in Davao City, the Department of Social Welfare and Development tries to coordinate with NGOs providing psychosocial services and rehabilitation to individuals who are internally displaced and violence and torture survivors. There is always a place for youth in this entire activity which can be substantially proven by the presence of youth rehabilitation center. In Davao City there is one particular rehabilitation center with a strong tie up or connection with NGOs for additional funding and technical support in psychological and educational aspects. One of the most common Philippine Human Rights NGOs in the country is “Balay” a native Filipino word for “home”. The specific task of this NGO is to provide psychological and educational support (Balay Rehabilitation Center, 2012). In the same way, the rehabilitation center for youth in Davao City aims to provide the same type of support. However, this organization remarkably needs support from outside sources in order to implement the necessary and appropriate treatment for the rehabilitated young people. Importance of psychological, educational rehabilitation centers for the youth Psychological distress is strongly observed to result to subsequent offending (Saunders et al., 2011). This is one of the reasons why there is a need to include psychological rehabilitation for young people due to some important ideas about the other related social impacts of psychologically unsound individuals. This means that from psychological stand point, what happens to individuals is basically viewed to create potential impacts on how they would treat or respond to others. In rehabilitation center, the very reason therefore why young people are continuously monitored in their psychological response is in order to create the necessary steps in order to stabilize their behaviors or attitudes towards others. For example, those young people who have history in murder and drug misuse are strongly monitored so as to evaluate their overall well-being most particularly on the mind’s function. From psychoanalytic and behavioral perspectives in psychology, individuals substantially learned from their environment (Feldman, 2003). Thus, in order to successfully make the rehabilitation program works for the young people, the need to integrate the environment and psychological perspective is a must. Thus, in rehabilitation center for young people, they are always given the chance and opportunity to mingle with others and ultimately be part of the group. It is in this level that the sense of belongingness is to have positive impacts on one’s psychological needs, which would potentially tell subjective well-being (Malone, Pillow & Osman, 2012). On the other hand, educating the young people gives them the ability or opportunity to understand more the things around them. It is a way of revealing them substantial perspectives in order for them to remarkably respond positively to the entire rehabilitation program (Bybee, Bellany & Mowbray, 2000). This is clear enough to be highly applicable among individuals with mental health problems or even those who just need to be guided accordingly with the right way of thinking – basically a form of behavior modification (Wempe & Wijkstra, 2004). The above are just some of the importance of psychological and educational rehabilitation for youth especially those who have wrong or badly different perspective about the use of prohibited drugs. It is found that based on the above information, rehabilitation program is just a way to correct an individual and train him or her to create a positive response to discipline.
