This week I learnt about the process of sound production and the mechanisms involved. I also paid attention to the articulator during the exercises by learning how to articulate different sounds to and words in the solo song that were part if the exercises. Am still learning and practicing on how to effectively control some of the components of the vocal mechanism. The ensemble group just got together and is still focusing on mastering the song chosen. The major focus for this week’s lectures was the differentiation of voiced and unvoiced consonants. During the practice exercises outside class I learnt the different ways of producing unvoiced sounds. I was able to differentiate the positioning of articulators so as to either produce voiced or unvoiced sound and the major vocal mistakes resulting from the vocal mechanism of articulation. The personal practical exercises make it easier to identify the different vocal variations and their impact on the singing of an individual. The ensemble practice requires a lot more input in terms of vocal practice to harmonize our vocal ability. The song My bunny is fairly simple with minimal vocal variations. Singing in low key is quite difficult. Weekly reflection The question was about voice care. This week I learnt about the voice anatomy and the care it should be given to relive it from straining in order to produce quality sound. I focused on taking a lot of water to moisten the vocal box before and during the exercises and realized that hydration can help deal with strain experienced when phonating very high notes which are not within ones vocal range. To reduce raspy voice I have also reduced yelling, throat clearing and being next to smokers so as not to destroy my vocal membranes. The vowels are a good exercise and help remember the notes perfectly. I do not have a very wide vocal range. Weekly reflection How to contribute to an ensemble? And the choice of the song. I directed my main attention this week to selecting the song for solo performance. After realizing the limits of my vocal range, I focused on selecting a song that best suits the range. Most low key songs are not fit for my voice as articulation becomes fairly difficult. I will also not work on songs that require blended registration but instead song with small vocal variations at the beginning like my bunny exercise. Read More
