Number] Rock and Roll Music History in Asia ‎ Music, the food for soul has always been existed with numerous forms and genres. Among many famous forms in the history of music, there is Rock and Roll. Though, it has not always been a part of the music world. Where did the Rock and Roll initiate and from where did it become such a leading force in the music world and cultures all around the globe, is the question many doesn’t know. Rock and Roll has been quite possible more than fifty years since the first ever rock and roll music was recorded. It is not easy to believe, however there was once a time when there was not any trace of rock music. Many of the music historians guesses the origins of the rock music back in the year 1954. According to them, it was the phase when the new form of music called “Rock and Roll” surfaced and revolted musical trends. The younger generation was happened to be most affected by this new form of music. Rock and Roll music changed the entire world of music and gave new waves of rhythms (Allen 54). This new form of music, of course did not originate in an isolation, but was an outcome from the union of two musical forms. These two forms were Rhythm Blues and Country, along with a vista of technological enhancements that developed an innovative beginning of a music market. Similar to Jazz, Rhythm and Blues created from the music form called the Blues. The Blues were actually getting its concept and origin from African spirituality and work records sung by the African-Americans living the South. One of the greatest creators in the 1950s of the Rock music, Little Richard has mostly expressed that Rhythm and Blues had an offspring and it was known as Rock and Roll. He was definitely right, and numerous eminent artists of Rock and Roll were also the part of the origination of the music form. Among many of them, there were Muddy Waters, Joe Turner, Ray Charles, and Willie Mae Thornton. Initially, the rock and roll became admired in small clubs and on the radio. Afterwards, with the introduction of some famous radio programs, teenagers were able to enjoy their favorite bands on television. Although, not everyone was enthusiastic about this form of music. The majority of the parents didn’t appreciate the evocative dancing, wayward lyrics, and piercing, fast beats (Gill 102). A little time earlier, specifically during the 40s and 50s, rhythm and blues were also growing. Initiated primarily in the rural areas, the blue created its way into the urban cities. Rhythm and blues were made up of quite peculiar and different styles, including doo-wop and black gospel tunes. Probably, its most crucial aspect was a particular type of twelve bar blues. However, conventional rhythm and blues artists were African American and the topic of the songs mostly had arousal references, it never completely obtained the approval of a national audience like several other famous sounds of the time. Also, most of the music rock and roll artists were the rebellious teenagers who started their musical career while disobeying their parents (Nash 115). In the history of Asian rock and roll, India has been a unique example among developing markets and had a record industry especially in the Gramophone Company of India. The records were largely available, including the rock and roll acts from Britain and the United States. Among these mid 1960s music groups, one of the most famous were the Mystiks originated from Bombay, the Flinstone from Calcutta and Madrasi Beat X. All these groups were influenced by the British invasion and hard rock. These musics were mostly played regularly in Indian universities and colleges. The origin of Chinese rock music was supposed to be in Beijing. Being the nation’s capital, the genre of the music was tremendous criticized and generated a series of foreign impacts. It was unimportant for the majority of the 1980s, comprising of live shows in minor bars and hotels. The music style was nearly exclusively for the purpose of high grade students and also some of the invisible bohemian classes. In the early 1990s, Chinese rock and roll partially surfaced into conventional music as a union of the Northwest Wind along with the reformatory song craze. The first ever Chinese rock and roll song was possibly the Northwest Wind song. This was initially performed in 1984 by Cui Jian, largely recognized as the father of Chinese rock and roll. The song launched into post reforming China an entire new philosophy that joined individualism, straightforward and robust expression. Further, it also happened to represent with the frustration helped by a disenchanted generation of young minds who grew skeptical regarding Communism and grace of China’s conventional and modern culture. It further showed, even for elder Chinese, a discontent with unrealized assurances of the Chinese rule. Subsequent to the Tian’anmen Square rebels, rock and roll became a part of the universal urban youth of China. Its rousing celebration took place on 17th and 18th of February; it was the time when Beijing’s biggest ever rock concert was taking place in the Capital Gymnasium which is also renowned for the city’s largest halls. The concert showed six rock bands, along with the Cui Jian’s ADO and the Tang Dynasty. The standard that the organizers placed as a requirement to participate was authenticity. Until the 1970s, the United States were in random places, with regard to music. That initiated to alter gradually, at initial, after the demise in 1976 of the Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong. Currently, China has a flourishing rock scenario. Also the Canadian music artists and writer Jonathan Campbell shifted to China ten years back. He surfaced himself in the musical context there and soon showed his interest in the history of rock and roll in China. Campbell expresses with anchor Lisa Mullins regarding his new book known as the “Red Rock”; it is the long, strange march of Chinese Rock and Roll (Schwartz 10). 1980-86: Contemporary Music of 80s prior to Rock and Roll One of the initial Western music impacts incoming China subsequent to its “Curtain Raiser” by Deng Xiao Ping in 1979 was the development of the disco songs. Foreigners were permitted more autonomies, so that in Beijing at the International Club habitual disco club nights were organized, just like the events in Shangai’s Jing Jiang Hotel (Wald 200-210). 1986: An instant of precision The major event of this year in particular was the concert known as Rang Shijie Chongaan ai at Beijing in the Worker’s Stadium. In this performance Cui Jian performed on some of his best songs like “Nothing to my name” (numerous English translation is in use) and Bu Shi Wo Bu Ming Bai. One more song title “I have nothing” got a huge hit, and the expression “one without you” is currently a part of the vocabulary numerous young people use to elaborate their quandary and upcoming prospects. Beside this, White Angel was also created in 1986. Participants in that phase comprised Lao Wu and Feng Man Tian on guitars, Liu Jun Li on bass, Cheng Jin on drums and Tian Shuo on keyboards (Wald 210). 1987-89: Development of Rock bands The Rock parties took place in Beijing almost every month; this was expressed by the Guo Chuanlin the founding member of the famous Black Panther. Additionally, Shanghai’s community gets combined with the AV World and monthly performances took place brought together by hundreds of readers combined to hear the music and enjoy the videos. After a year, in 1988 the DA Nio and the most famous Tang Dynasty was created and now it is known as rock legends in China. Further Jiang Xin initiated too play rock in 1988 after she became acquaintances with Duo Wei, Ding Wu, and Zhang Ju who all certainly impact the creation of Chinese rock and roll in the 1990s. 1989 witnessed bands like Cobra, the girls group, The Breathing created by Zhao Muyang, and the authentic band of Gao Qi’s, The Face was initiated (Allen 50-90). 1990s: The Boom of Foreign Investments In the early 90s, there was an impact witnesses which was a strategy to boost China out from its emerging state. Numerous government run publishing houses misplaced their funding and had to come up with profits and actual income. Soon after the Tianamen chaos settled down and the rock’s craze gradually and constantly rose in and out of Beijing. The studios and publishers in China’s largest cities initiated to sign bands, like The Compass or also known as The Breathing. In 1991, numerous other groups created like Red Army, Vexing Practice, The Compass, Again, and the Zhen Han are some famous names. Also, in August 1991 the Black Panther’s first ever record was launched in Hong Kong. In 1993, Beijing Bastards, the famous hit was released which telecasted Cui Jian along with other artists. Moreover, Beijing Music Radio released their Rock Magazine program which was the pioneer rock and roll broadcasts launched in China. Another important milestone took place on May 14th, 1994 when King performed at the launching event of the Hard Rock Café Beijing with the epic Cui Jian. Also, Punk became a craze of fanatics in China during 1994-96. The first Chinese Punk was thriving by New Metal. These two revolutions were the part of the famous New Sound of China. In February, the Black Panther launched their third big record named No Right No wrong. Around April 1996, the musician XTX and Underbaby performed at a memorial concert show at Kurt Cobain, situated at the Solutions Bar. On the celebration of Chinese Youth Day, the Underbaby and the Catcher in the Rye showed off at the Bo Er Ka Club. Moreover, in the same year the famous rock band Lonely China Day also originated (Gill 100-110). 1997-2004: Hidden Guts During the entire period of 1997 to 2004, the hidden scenario of rock and roll music further advanced, just like as a middle school excels to a bigger level and develops itself with the midi fiesta; as a rock and roll festival in usual spring into life and frolic everywhere across China. It emerged as creative sub genres, like the New Metal, Post Punk and the Extreme Metal achieved fame. Also, the Hip Hop surfaced all around China (Gill 100-110). 2004-Till Date: The Western Expedition From the start of the new millennium, an emerging globalization of the Chinese musical context can easily be realized. That refers to the Chinese bans which are more vigorously acting and selling in many foreign countries, are acquiring contracts with numerous international music companies, especially in the USA and European countries. The year of 2008 in which the entire world was curious about China and the Olympics, many plans were either cancelled or postponed, however still the common trend is concise. Many new bands have been formed and so many new music albums have been launched (Nash 100-115). Although, rock and roll music has navigated the world, however nowhere has it congregated with the form of response and conduct as it has in China. Similar to numerous Western phenomena, rock music slowly and arbitrarily trickled its way into a nation craving for and profoundly dubious of contact with the rest of the world. Also, one still negotiating with the destruction of the last decades. Since an increasing number of kids got their approach on rare music recordings and stole peeks of this unfamiliar culture, an understanding set in: Rock didn’t merely expressed a new era in their lives. It was ground breaking—and this was a nation that was known from revolution. Rock’s trip through the Middle Kingdom booms the nation’s generation-next and combining with the rest of the world. How the rock music was created by its newest—and greatest—fans and followers produced not only a peculiar way, but also an exclusive beat: Yaogun. Yaogun’s tale is not merely that of the enlightened and the rise of the world’s innovative superpowers, but the force of music. The prospect of the nation will decide Yaogun’s way, just as it clarified its past. However, if Yaogun survives up to its capability, it just might alter the nation—and rock the entire world (Schwartz 10).
