The nature of the music is that it is a slowed down version of the hard rock example, a slower steady beat with highly emotional lead guitar and bass. It is the emotions of the music that is the most important element as the sentimentality expresses something deep.
The recording even sounds a bit like a record as opposed to a digital recording the music slightly scratching and a raw sensibility that lends to the feeling that the music is displaced, the sound coming across from the perspective of its period framework.
However, the redux by A Perfect Circle has a much more haunting tone, a minor key used to create a much more socially relevant sound in that it is wistful and with less hope than the original recording gives. Where Lennon seemed to be saying how wonderful it could be if we could just accomplish this, A Perfect Circle manages to discuss how the ideal is unreachable, that the darkness always looms just outside of hope.
I like this piece quite a bit, because it has a much cleaner, more refined sound than a lot of music that is produced today. Furthermore, you get the sense that Yo-Yo Ma actually puts some of himself into his music, and that even an untrained ear could tell the difference between him and another performer because he takes a good deal of license to interpret the piece of music in a way that is more meaningful to him.
The pauses throughout give delineation to each segment of the song and allows one to listen to it without every feeling lost or out of place. There is much that I appreciate about this piece of music, but at the same time it does not really speak to me. I think part of the problem is that this song is not in my musical vocabulary, and it is harder for me to see where the artist is coming from in many of the sections, so it tends to be a bit less evocative than more modern music that I listen to.
