Reading Response Rumba is a type of music that was introduced into North America by the 1950s. The most interesting thing is that I thought that Rumba was only practiced in Africa and more so by the Congolese for instance a popular Rumba music singer Koffi Olominde of Congo. It was so fascinating to know that this type of music is also present in North America in Cuba. Another interesting thing I learnt from the article is that New Orleans was controlled by the spaniards (AllMusic 2014). New Orleans is popular for Jazz genre of music.

I have grown to know that New Orleans was the land of French people because I see and hear the French quoter in most movies for instance the “Originals.”Dizzy Gillespie brought the fame of Afro-Cuban jazz in 1946 when he was working alongside Bauza. In addition, it is amazing to understand that the elements of jazz music go back to historical artists who were marvelous in the likes of Alberto Socarras and Machito and his Afro-Cubans (AllMusic 2014). Therefore, this article has taught me a lot on the history of Afro-Cuban Jazz and most interesting rumba music.

The questions that come to mind while reading this article is how modern day Jazz and Rumba has evolved over the centuries. What is the quality of today’s Jazz and Rumba as compared to the ancient music. It brings curiosity to me because I would like to understand the ancient music and today’s. On the other hand, the article is very involving and attracts the attention of the reader because of the rich information it contains. Conclusively, this article has increased my understanding and appreciation of the various genres of music.
