Cause and Effect: The Causes and Effects of Divorce Many couples having a union got together hoping that things will work out no matter what. However, among the multitudes of such couples, a few grow to achieve this dream. Along the path, some get separated from their spouses, and many end up being divorced each citing reasons that to them seem viable. Divorce is not new in the society, with reported cases exacerbating in the recent years, a scenario which continues to rise in number over the years (Clarke-Stewart & Brentano 62).
Theorists and researchers have tried to identify factors and causes leading to divorce in an institution which is believed to be the basic in the society and the most relevant to human growth. This is with reference to marriage and family which form the basic unit in the society. Factors that have arguably been seen to contribute to marital separation are also linked to the after effects especially to the children and the single parent, not to mention the society at large. One of the main causes for divorce as has been provided by the researcher is money.
This is conceived to lead to the majority of family breakups. Most couples are displeased with the spending habits of each other leading to violence and fights. Irresponsibility of one partner can also lead to divorce based on money issues where one parent takes over considerable duties at the expense of the other who just spends. In the long run, the two parties shun away from responsibilities and in the event of there being offspring, inadequacy of basic needs is experienced. Another cause of divorce relates to alcohol and abuse of substances by one or both partners.
This abuse builds a strain on a relationship and sometimes the user becomes violent followed with abusive habit. When a partner cannot take it anymore, they quit creating single homes. In the event of children who bear the biggest burden, some develop health problems. It also influences the behavior of children and affects their growth psychologically. Others even end up using the drugs as a defeatist attitude and become more violent on their acts. On the contrary, some of them end up against such poor habits but develop low self-esteem based on the backgrounds and upbringing.
Sexual problems are other cited causes. Sexual libido is a stemming issue in marriage where an unsatisfied partner tends to seek relief from the external environment and other people. This in itself is an act that has been valued as unfaithfulness and if caught, most face the risk of being left. Others separated because of pure biological reasons such as inability to sire children, impotence and physical issues (Millar 107). Reasons for divorce in this field range from family to family from prudence to unfaithfulness.
Besides this, lack of communication is cited among the causes of divorce. Communication and dialogue, which are the key issue that should govern any relationship, are also essential, and their absence causes separation of couples. Some families either lack the complete set or just have little of it. However, research shows that many families that have separated have faced this significant part. Partners do not communicate their feelings, things that they dislike, what they want done and how, their attitudes towards certain behavior.
Others speak too harshly, in a rude manner or are more arrogant leading to quarrels and fight which eventually becomes physical violence. In this case, a partner opts to leave. The effects of lack of communication in marriage are misconceptions by the other partner, misunderstandings, pull-offs, withdrawal, dislike and hatred that builds up until the victim cannot take it anymore (Scritto 91). Other noted reasons for divorce include jealous partners, in-laws, irresponsibility, children, attitude and immaturity (Clarke-Stewart & Brentano 83).
The extended family creates friction between the wed-locks by meddling and raising demands thus causing them to separate. Jealous partners especially in the case of women tend to be suspicious of other ladies even if they are friends to the husband. Most families break up out of the number of children that they intent to sire. If a child is conceived that was not intended, then it becomes a rife issue between the spouses questioning the inevitable of how come and some even clinging to the belief that the child could have been sired from outside.
The effects of divorce in marriage are geared mainly to the children who have a lot to endure. As much as the single parent may have to bear an immense burden towards the raising of the children most of the effects are psychological to the parent. Children get scared, become withdrawn, quiet, bitter, or aggressive when confronted with the brutal facts of divorce (Millar 128). Some feel lonely, neglected and rejected while other can begin to distrust people, become rebellious or even have deviations in behavior.
Single parents, on the other hand, have a financial burden to bring up children, while those without children are traumatized sometimes leading to withdrawal, self-hatred and depression. Not only is the issue on divorce hard to bear for those concerned, it also affects the society at large through contributing and influencing the general balance and distribution of people.
