? 22 June Attend a Live Musical Event of performer or group: Adam Meckler Orchestra Performance” March 26, 2012 from 8 pm to 9.30 pm Location: O'Gara's in Saint Paul, MN Introduction Music is a kind of entertainment for many people. “The key elements of Music are Pitch, Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Key, Texture, Dynamics, Timber, and Form’’ (“Music” para.1). Pitch, in music, is the means to explain how low or high the sound is. Rhythm is the association of sound and silence in time. Melody is a sequence of musical tones in a form that is familiar to the ear. Harmony refers to a collection of tones heard all together. Key in music is also called tonality of music. The volume of the note is known as the dynamics of the music. Timber is also known as tone color. Many dissimilar forms of sounds can be generated from the same instrument. Musical form is the group of all elements in a rational form, which involves the style of the music. The musical style selected in this topic is jazz music, which is a kind of popular music with some improvisation on melody and rhythm that originated in 1900s. “Adam Meckler is a professional trumpet player, composer and educator living in Saint Paul, MN“(“Adammecklerbio” para.1). He plays frequently with his quintet, the Adam Meckler Quintet, and his big band, The Adam Meckler Orchestra. Adam has toured all over the world as a performer with bands. The Setting or Occasion The music is performed in one of the Twin Cities where the original music is being played by modern jazz big bands, and features some of the most exciting young jazz musicians from the Twin Cities. There were so many fans assembled in the O’Gara’s Shamrock Room to come and enjoy the music of this interesting band. The city features local music events, concerts and music festivals in all the areas. The Concert Program Works on the program During the course of the concert, he played “Once upon a Sunrise,” “Skyline,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” “The World If I Could,” “The Tao of Heavy D,” “Song for BB,” “Sparkly Eyes,” and “Beautiful Beatrice.” All the performances were mind blowing. He played the “Song for BB” as a tribute to Bob Brooke Meyer who was a famous jazz musician, composer, arranger and educator and who unfortunately passed away in the previous year. Composition of Orchestra/Ensemble He has performed with famous orchestras all over the world. In the concert held at St. Paul, his orchestra included an 18 piece big band consisting of maestros playing instruments such as trumpets by Zack Lozier, Tom Krochock, Sten Johnson, Noah Ophoven-Baldwin, and Cameron Kinghorn; saxophones by Jason Fabus, Nelson Devereaux, Ben Doherty, Tyler Anderson, and Angie Hirsch; drums by Pete Hennig; trombones by Keith Hilson, DJ Clovis, Mason Hemmer, Nathan Berry; bass played by Chris Bates; guitar by Evan Montgomery; and finally the keyboards by Steven Hobert. Variety of Musical Forms Composers The original compositions and arrangements of the music were done by Adam Meckler himself for some of the songs he played at the concert. Apart from this, he has also played the music composed by other musicians such as Eric Clapton (“The World If I Could”), Henry Mancini (“Days of Wine and Roses”), and Adam Meckler (“Song for BB”). The Musical Work The Musical Form Though the musical instrumentation is that of a traditional jazz big band, the music is influenced by modern pop, rock as well as gospel. The musical form ranges from traditional New Orleans tunes and Mardis Gras favorites to funk ‘n’ soul hits. Movements or Parts It was very interesting to see Adam Meckler and his “18 piece band” perform live on stage. They performed in great accordance with the electronic sounds of the musical instruments (“Adam Meckler Orchestra” para.1). Musical Theme and Motifs The theme of music performed by Adam Meckler is a mixture of pop and jazz style. Almost all the music is produced to make the audiences happy and light up a spark of excitement in their hearts. He has written a lot of music to honor his father’s life, which represent his emotions during the time his father passed away. His music includes a thread of funky ambience as well as an elegiac song “From First to Last.” Orchestration The orchestration of Adam Meckler includes musical instruments such as trumpets, saxophones, trombones, bass, guitar and keyboards. The orchestra played Adam Meckler’s original music at the concert. Key, Dynamics, Tempo Key, dynamics and tempo are the elements which make music interesting to the audiences. Adam Meckler uses the tempo slowly, bit by bit, in his music. The dynamics are applied depending on the theme of the music. Once the music starts, the key automatically falls into place from the beginning to the end. The composer Adam Meckler is a professional composer, trumpet player and educator living in Saint Paul, MN. He holds a B. Mus from Lawrence University in Jazz Studies, and a M.M in Performance of the Trumpet from the University of Minnesota. He has also studied composition from some of the finest and most excellent composers in the world, including Dean Sorenson, Fred Sturm, Doug Richards and Richard Sussman. Adam Meckler has toured all over the earth with Todd Clouser's A Love Electric and The Jana Nyberg Group. “Adam and his wife Jana (Nyberg) currently reside in Saint Paul, MN. Adam performs regularly with The Jana Nyberg Group, his own quintet and trio, Nova Jazz Orchestra, the Stan Bann Big Band, Con Alma, and freelances as a composer and performer” (“Adam Meckler” para.2). He may be very new to the Twin Cities, but at the same time, this highly skilled trumpeter is poised to create some real noise on the scene. A current graduate of Lawrence University’s respected and esteemed jazz program, Adam brings an extremely refined musical sense to his writing and takes probability with his solos songs in new exciting ways. The style, period, or musical tradition The Adam Meckler concert was held on March 26, 2012, from 8 pm to 9.30 pm, in O'Gara's in Saint Paul, MN. “Adam composes for jazz small groups and big bands, but also writes for woodwind quartet, quintet, and brass quintet settings” (“Adam Meckler Biography” para.2). Various songs at this concert and its style and periods are given below. Once Upon a Time Tour was a performance tour by Donna Summer, a famous American singer that was highly active during 1977 and 1978. The style of this music was ambient music. “Skyline” by Adam Meckler Orchestra was released on Nov 11, 2010 in Australia and Nov 12, 2010 in the US and the style of music was jazz. “Days of Wine and Roses” was released on December 26, 1962 (United States) and its music was performed by Henry Mancini and here also jazz was the music style. “The World If I Could,” by Eric Clapton, was released on October 7, 1997 and the style of music was Midwest hip hop. The song “The Tao of Heavy” was released in June 1998. It is the type of entertainment music, which provides a state of natural relaxation. “Song for BB,” by The Adam Meckler Orchestra, was released on March 26, 2012, which was again a type of Jazz music. The context This musical stage show is a form of theater that combines different kinds of songs, acting, spoken dialogue and dance. The emotional and story content of the part, pathos, anger, humor, and love are communicated in the course of the music, words, movement and technological features of the entertainment as an incorporated whole. While musical stage show overlaps with other various theatrical and dramatic forms such as dance and opera, it may be distinguished by the equivalent significance given to the music as compared with the movement, dialogue, and other elements of the works. A cultural system can have completely opposite connotation in a different religious and social context. With a quick look at Islamic and Hindu culture, it can be seen that music and dance have precisely opposite connotation in these two religions, but there have also been attempts in history to bridge this merge and chasm of the two traditions in the course of music and dance. Christian music is also a type of music that has been written to express either a communal or personal belief as regard Christian faith and life. General themes of Christian music consist of worship, praise, lament and penitence and its forms vary extensively across the world.
