In as much as government regulations weaken the economy through various restrictions on the use of resources, it remains the best way of controlling environmental pollution. Economic instruments employed by the government realign and reorganize the rights of firms, individuals and groups of people. This denies them the full obligation to exploit resources successfully. On the other hand, markets inherently use expensive inputs while investing in higher and promising returns. Whether the returns use non-environmental friendly methods, resulting into environmental degradation is not a concern of many business people.
Their main aim is to use the most sustainable approach in order to gain higher outputs (Chen, 2003). It is at this point that environmental regulations imposed by the government play a significant role by ensuring that as much as people exploit resources the societal value, which maintains the environmental quality, gets maintained. Tragedy of the commons is a problem associate with resource exploitation without clear Legislations. It is a form of resource exploitation where people concentrates on exploiting resources for their own benefit; while not considering the effects on the resources.
Common resources, therefore, have adverse effects, which only calls for legislation for controlled exploitations. Lack of legislations; result into over exploitation of resources, which lead to problems such as the tragedy of commons (Mill, 2007). It must also be realized that when exploitation occurs beyond the required limit the resources ability to propel economic growth becomes limited. It is from this perspective that sustainable resource use gets controlled by government regulations. In adequate regulations, guarantee short run economic development while controlled resource use ensures long-term sustainability and economic
