Security Roles Introduction: The security department in any organization primarily performs to protect the assets and properties of the organization along with the employees as well as other associated members. Since this is one of the most important functions that take place within an organization it is considered as a service for the organization. It is a protective measure on the part of the organization intended to prevent crimes and losses that might happen with the assets of an organization (Sennewald, 2011, p.25). The current study focuses on the roles of the security in the protection of organization’s assets and the related responsibilities of the security professionals. Role of Security in Protection of an Organization’s Assets: The primary role of the security department of an organization is to protect the assets and employees of the organization from any kind of losses. For the purpose the different activities performed by the security department include arresting and punishing criminals, undertaking controlling and administrative measures, screening of employees, monitoring departments and organizational data, securing the parking atmosphere, making patrolling facilities available for keeping checks on different vehicles, presenting themselves through proper attires, managing different security and locking systems and controlling programs set within the organization, performing investigations on any criminal activity occurring in regard to the assets or employees of the organization, undertaking protective measures to encounter natural disasters or strikes and other related issues, performs coordinately in different response programs for the times of disasters, makes contracts with external security forces for enhanced security measures and these are professionals and experts thus being more responsible in their activities, providing the company with courier and guide services at times of crisis, as well as provides advices for different security measures that the company might carry out for the securing its assets and properties and all aspects of security related matters of an organization (Sennewald, 2011, pp.25-26). Professional Responsibilities of a Security Director: The role of the security director is highly significant since the functions of the department would depend on the director’s decisions and the manner in which he carried his performances. He plays a major role as a consultant and advices the organization in regard to decisions of disaster planning, or other security related issues. A security director performs his roles as an executive, an innovator, a counselor, a trainer, a contemporary professional, as well as a strategic planner. In the role of an executive, the security director contributes in the decision making of the board of an organization even when in issues other than just the security systems. The expenses of the different tasks related to the security needs to be kept in control that requires the security director to determine innovative measures playing the role of an innovator. Since the security director experiences a lot in the field, he also proves to be a successful counselor for the organization. As a trainer, the security director takes the charge of training and developing the employees of the security department positively affecting their performances towards the benefit of the organization. The director also keeps the tracks of all the laws and policies that have been changing over the years, their possible impacts on the company and the technological advancements occurring in the industry. Also, as a strategic planner, the security director sets the goals and objectives of the organization thus providing directions to the organizational performances and clearly reflecting the missions (Sennewald, 2011, pp.35-39). Skills Required for Security Professionals to Succeed in his Job: Supervisory, leadership and managerial skills are the major skills required by the security professional to perform his security responsibilities successfully. Leadership is necessary to let the security professional take decisions on his own and communicate them to the employees of the department for their successful implementation. Thus they also encourage the employees in their performances and it is their responsibilities to choose appropriate personnel for the security department of the organization. In the process, the professional performs its supervisory activities which are the primary objectives of the security department and undertakes protective measures for the assets and employees of the organization. The managerial responsibilities also are of equal importance in this regard since the activities of the employees are needed to manage efficiently to succeed. These include maintaining appropriate discipline and proper communication and explanation of the duties to the team of work (Davies, 2007, pp.222-229). Internal and External Relations Contributing in the Security Department’s Mission: Maintaining proper relations both internal and external to an organization is essential in the successful implementation of a security professional’s mission objectives. Internal to an organization, the team of personnel working for the security department need to build up a trustworthy relationship since the matter concerns the security measures. If the personnel are not trustworthy, chances are that the measures undertaken might be leaked to the world outside the organization, and taken advantage of by many other organizations. Thus proper management team and delegation of authorities are necessary in this area. The top management teams are more involved in this regard as they are believed to handle the relationships and the personnel more maturely and sensitively (Bidgoli, 2004, p.77). External relations are equally important since external security agencies are also involved in the security measures of an organization. Moreover, the management representative of a team would represent the organization to the outsiders, the employees and the customers that require a proper understanding from both the sides to effectively implement the programs and succeed (IFPO, 2010, p.43). Activities of Security Operatives: Security managers within an organization identify the required measures for the protection of the organization’s assets and accordingly plan and organize the measures. The use of appropriate and available resources is the responsibility of the security management team. The advanced use of technology is also considered in the context. While such activities are planned by the management, the implementation of these activities requires a proper team work. Thus responsibilities are delegated to other managers of the team or deputizing is conducted for the purpose. Supervising is the main activity of the security operatives. As an ultimate activity each and every measure undertaken by the security team for the protection of an organization’s assets are continuously monitored and analyzed and in case of needs the measures are modified for the betterment of the organization (McCrie, 2006, pp.7-10). Conclusion: The study clearly represents the role of the security department and the security director and the team working under him in any organization. They undertake measures and perform efficiently towards a successful security system within their organization for effectively protecting their assets, information and the employees. For this they suitably maintain their team as well as develop the required skills to attain success for their organizations. References 1) Bidgoli, H. (2004).
