Activity 15.5 A. My overall reaction to the memo is that it was written poorly and emotionally. A business memo should be to-the-point and professional. There should be no immaturity as seen through angry comments or bitter remarks. If I were an employee there, I would react very defensively as it appears that the letter was mockingly written. I would be hard-pressed to change my actions because the letter is insulting.
B. The lead-in phrasing in the introduction should set up for a professional tone. However, the angry, somewhat rude mocking of the employees initiated from the beginning makes for a bad memo. Already employees will be hesitant to read the rest of the letter based on the tone of the introduction. It also puts employees on the defense rather than encouraging them to change their behavior.
C. Other objectionable phrases include: Hansel and Gretel don’t work here, it was only a pipe dream that you would all learn to walk straight, staggering down the hallway, I think that you lied, and common courtesy rather than just being common, etc. These phrases induce trouble and disrespect for the employees in the workplace, which is why they are so inappropriate and unprofessional.
D. INTRO
There have been some concerns lately about employees not abiding by company policy. Please review the following list of specific issues that need to be addressed:
ALTERNATE PARAGRAPH
Time sheets need to be filled out and completed daily. Please note that they are due no later than 9 a.m. on the 15th of every month. It is important to keep up-to-date on them and to be punctual turning them in. Everyone needs to be responsible for their own sheet. Future violations of this policy could result in a verbal warning followed by a write up.
