It was the literary environment at home which turned the three obscure sisters into famous Bronte Sisters of English Literature. And similarly there had been circumstances which evolved my personality into my current character. When I was asked to pen down a paper on this topic I got bewildered. Writing about your family background might seem an easy task but it takes you down to a hard memory lane which is full of intricate events. I was born to Mike and LIZ, once upon a time, in the summer of 1971.

I must have been a source of joy to them as I was the first result of their union. They had first met at a grocery store and realized in their very first meeting that they had a connection. They had much in common music taste, love for Martin Luther King (Jr.) and an undying love for classic literature. My father was born in a family which desperately wanted to emerge out of the impression that Blacks had nothing else to do in life but drink. My mother, on the contrary, belonged to a typical African American family.

Though, they admired same music genres, their views on life were exactly at an angle of one eighty degrees. I still wonder what made them make the decision of marriage so quickly and produce babies because the union did not last long. I and my sister, who was four year younger to me, remained with my father while my mother left for another town and new life. Absence of mother particularly in growing age can affect a girl very badly. And in my case I neither had a mom nor a reasonable, educated aunt who could solve my day to day problems.

The only habit which my uncles and aunts carried with pride was of drugs. I grew up in the midst of drug activity and alcohol abuse by my uncles. The environment was conducive to produce another African American girl, with no insight into life and no hope for a brighter future.
