Specifically, the main subject of the short story is the extent of actions that can be undertaken to make the people follow the commands, this even death. There are different methods used by the author in the development of the plot and theme of the story. Included in the said literary devices that had been utilized by the author are the phasing, the setting, the foreshadowing, the irony, the point of view, the symbolism and the plot which composed of the conflict, the climax and the resolution (Albright 28).
The phasing of the story is abrupt which added to the atmosphere of fear and lack of ease that is the main subject of the story. This can be attributed to the fact that the presentation of events in fragments made the readers try to connect and predict the possible events that can occur after. The said literary device and the effect in the development of the theme can be associated to the role of foreshadowing (p. 58). There are different events in the story that can be considered as related to phasing and foreshadowing.
In the story, the events had been presented in the absence of connection between sequences. One moment the character is in a place then in another he is in another. Don Lazaro is at the Colonel’s office listening to the command to kill the five young men then he is in front of the parents of the said men and telling them the news and desperation of the situation to save the whole village. On the other hand, foreshadowing can be observed in different scenarios. One is the description of the deaths that occurred in other localities, the sound of the bells, the common scenario of seeing a procession of death in the village that is blessed by the religious leaders and the point of view of Don Lazaro in the need to save the majority.
