There are two basic types of the personal watercraft. One is the ski type which is ridden standing up (Figure 1) and manoeuvred mostly through balance. It is used mainly in race competitions. The other is the waverunner type, which is operated by the rider who is seated, and is similar to a snowmobile or motorcycle (Figure 2). Manoeuvred through a combination of steering and balance, it is easier to ride for the novice (Lamy: 29-30). Jet skis are available in various engine and hull sizes. Engine sizes are specified in cubic centimeters.

The hull design contributes to the performance of the machine; short, narrow machines are highly manoeuverable, and suitable for skilled riders, though may be difficult to operate for beginners. Though wider, longer designs have reduced manoeuverability, they are more stable, carry more people, and deflect spray better. Larger engines produce more horsepower and greater speed (eHow Sports & Fitness Editor, 2008). Jet skis are powered by a motor as are land vehicles. The personal watercraft run on two-stroke or four-stroke engines, the former have two or three cylinders, and the four-stroke models normally have four cylinders.

Jet ski engines have two distinctive properties. There is a button on the handle of the jet ski that helps to send an electrical signal to the engine’s ignition, which starts the process of turning on the motor. This is followed by the engine continuing the operation and powering the jet ski. Since engines create a great deal of heat, there is the requirement for a cooling system. For most jet skis, water is let into the craft to cool it. In the handlebar, there is a small notch for a pin that is usually connected to the rider’s waist or life vest.
