To qualify for RHIA a candidate has to pass the baccalaureate level, of a health information management (HIM) program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM)* )* or a foreign association These are the following membership categories- active i.e. individuals interested in the AHIMA purpose and willing to abide by the Code of Ethics; student i.e. those who do not have an AHIMA credential and have not previously been Active members; new graduate i.e. AHIMA Student Members only, at reduced annual rates and limited to one year; senior i.e. current AHIMA members who are 65 and over as a recognition for their service.

The New code of ethics revised and approved by the House of Delegates in July 2004 serves as a guide for the professional ethics of its members and credentialed non-members, and consists of 5 sections i.e. Preamble, Values, Purpose, the use of the Code, Ethical Principles and guidelines to interpret the principles. This Act seeks to establish, reauthorize and reinvigorate allied health education programs and came about as a result of AHIMA and other organizations that seek to address the shortage of qualified HIM and other allied health professionals and educators in the industry which if not done can impact the healthcare industry negatively. 12.
