Up till this day they still talk about it. The death of their grandmother was very difficult for them to deal with because they were close to her. Ryan, the eldest son, attended college and received a degree in fire science. He currently works as a foreman for an electric company. Daniel is attending college, seeking a degree in Business Administration. His goal is to become an architect and own his own business. Ira is a Vietnam veteran. His rank was of a Sergeant and his tasks were primarily maintenance and repair of aero space equipment.
He recalls how poorly veterans were treated then and how differently they are treated now. At that time the Vietnam War was not well seen. The troops were not supported as the World War I or World II ones. The enlisted men that returned from Vietnam were not seen positively and were blamed for the atrocities committed there. This made many of the people in the armed forces, feel like criminals and they thought they had done something wrong. People in general did not approve of the Vietnam war and threw trash on the uniformed soldiers upon arrival at the Seattle International Airport.
He remembers a moment, when he was in an elevator in the downtown Phoenix area and a girl asked him, why are you wearing your Air Force jacket? He remembers being guilty and out of place. The girl was being sarcastic. He said that Senator Sam Stieger sent a bulletin inviting veterans to go downtown and apply for jobs. At the time there were few available jobs. He went for an interview dressed in a suit. He was interviewed by a news channel and he was asked if he was willing to work out of the state and he replied “No, I am a native of Arizona and I would like to stay here, close to my family”.
The news station edited his reply to a short “No”. This situated him as a person who was too good to work out of the state. Going back in time, he felt that Senator Stieger was looking for publicity to make a
